Gray Zone Warfare is in Early Access

The head start is open, so the servers are live and the reports on this page are real players hitting real servers. Queues and login failures are normal in this window and are not the same thing as an outage: a queue means the servers are up and full.

About Gray Zone Warfare's servers

Gray Zone Warfare is MADFINGER Games’ tactical open-world shooter, set on the fictional Southeast Asian island of Lamang and built on Unreal Engine 5. It has been in Steam Early Access since April 30, 2024, on Windows only. You play as a private military contractor for one of three factions, on PvEvP servers (Warfare) or PvE servers (Joint Operations), solo or in a squad of up to four. MADFINGER says it has sold 1.7 million copies.

Progress lives on MADFINGER’s servers, so every major update has been a wipe: 0.2 Night Ops, 0.3 Winds of War and 0.4 Spearhead reset everyone. Update 0.5 Rogue Ops, due October 22, 2026 after a Supporter Preview from October 19, is a soft wipe that keeps rank and tasks but resets lockers and money. Connection errors cluster around big updates: a week after Update 0.4 shipped on March 31, 2026, players hit days of server problems, queues and “Online Persistence Error” kicks.

There’s no official status page. MADFINGER posts outages and hotfixes on X (@GrayZoneWarfare), in the Steam news feed and on its Discord, and runs a help centre at support.madfingergames.com with fixes for the most common error codes.

Maintenance, queues, and real outages

Three different things get reported as "Gray Zone Warfare is down," and only one of them is an outage. The chart above is the fastest way to tell them apart, once there's data on it:

A real outage

Reports spike hard within an hour, then decay as the problem is fixed. Nobody announced it in advance.

Scheduled maintenance

Reports climb steadily and stay flat for the length of the window, because everyone hits the same wall at the same time and keeps hitting it.

A login queue

Matchmaking/login reports climb while server-connection reports stay low, and a Steam player count (if shown above) holds flat instead of dropping. The servers are up and full, not down — waiting is the only fix.

Announced maintenance would show up at the studio's own status channel or the official Discord before it shows up here.

If it's only broken for you

Most "is it down" moments aren't outages. Work down this list before assuming the servers are the problem — it's ordered by how often each one turns out to be the answer, not by how easy it is.

  1. 01

Check the report count above first

It costs nothing and it settles the question. A flat report count means other players are getting in fine, and everything below is worth your time. A spike means it isn't you, and none of it is.

  2. 02

    Verify the game files

In Steam: right-click Gray Zone Warfare → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. A partial patch is the single most common cause of a game that launches and then fails to connect.

  3. 03

Restart the whole chain, in order

Game, then your launcher/Steam, then your router. People almost always do the first and skip the third — a stale router NAT table produces exactly the symptom people report as "servers down."

  4. 04

Rule out a VPN or restrictive network

A VPN fails matchmaking far more often than it fixes it, and so does a corporate or campus network that blocks the UDP ports a game server needs. If you're on a network you don't administer, that's the likely answer.

  5. 05

If it crashes rather than fails to connect, treat it as a crash

A game that starts and then dies, rather than never connecting, is usually a local fault — most often graphics drivers or overlay software, not the servers.

Gray Zone Warfare server status: common questions

Is Gray Zone Warfare down right now?

As of 01:03 UTC, 0 players have reported a problem in the last 15 minutes — counted as people, so repeat taps from one person don't inflate it. This page updates on every load.

Does Gray Zone Warfare have an official server status page?

No. MADFINGER Games doesn't run a status dashboard. Outages, server maintenance and hotfixes are posted on the official X account (@GrayZoneWarfare), in the game's Steam news feed and on the official Discord, which MADFINGER's help centre lists as the places to follow news. During the April 2026 outage after Update 0.4, a MADFINGER developer also posted live updates in a pinned Steam Discussions thread. If nothing is posted and the game won't connect, check the player reports on this page before assuming it's your connection.

"Online Persistence Error (0x00040008)": what it means →

Is there scheduled maintenance for Gray Zone Warfare?

There's no fixed weekly window. Hotfixes go out on no set day and are announced in the Steam news feed and on X. Some are server-side only and need no download, and earlier hotfix posts said "There is no server maintenance" and asked players to return to their FOB and end their expedition before updating, to save their progress. When a server is in maintenance mode, the main menu shows a maintenance timer.

What server regions does Gray Zone Warfare have, and can I pick one?

Yes, you pick the region yourself before deploying. MADFINGER's launch advice was to "select the region that best corresponds to your location", and to try a different region if the queue is long, at the cost of higher ping. MADFINGER's own posts name EU West, EU East, US East and US West; players also report Oceania and Asia servers. Server time of day is offset per region, so switching region also changes the in-game time.

Why am I stuck in a queue in Gray Zone Warfare?

Each server has a limited number of slots per faction. If your faction is full on the server you're joining, often a squad mate's server, the game queues you until a slot frees up, according to MADFINGER's help centre. Either wait, or have your squad mate end their expedition (ideally at base) so you can start a new one together on a server with room. During server trouble in April 2026, MADFINGER also advised switching to a nearby region, such as EU West to EU East, to get past long queues.

Will Update 0.5 Rogue Ops wipe my progress?

Partly. Update 0.5 is a soft wipe: MADFINGER says players from Update 0.4 keep their rank, unlocked apparel, vendor levels and completed tasks, but their locker and money are wiped. The first time you log in, you choose whether to move that progress to PvE or PvEvP, and the choice is irreversible. You can then make up to four characters. The Supporter Preview starts October 19, 2026 and the full release is October 22. Updates 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 were full wipes.

Do I lose my gear if I disconnect or the server crashes?

Not always. Players on the game's subreddit say you have about ten minutes to rejoin the same server after a disconnect, even if you restart your PC, and one player found closing the game and relaunching worked when the Reconnect button didn't. If the server fails to save your character, you get "Online Persistence Error (0x00040008)" and may lose items. MADFINGER has said players who lose gear to server issues can ask for compensation through a support ticket.

What's the difference between PvE and PvEvP servers?

PvEvP servers are called Warfare, and PvE servers are called Joint Operations. Both come with every edition and allow solo play or squads of up to four. On PvE servers you still meet players from other factions, but you can't attack or loot each other, according to MADFINGER's help centre.

I can't connect: is "0x0001000F" or "Steam Authorization Failure" my fault?

Usually it's your network. MADFINGER's help centre says to turn off IPv6 on your network adapter and restart, and at least 15 players in a Steam Discussions thread in April 2026 said that fixed it. When many players get these errors at the same moment, it's an outage: MADFINGER acknowledged a wave of 0x0001000F and 0x00010004 errors on April 9, 2026, and blamed an August 2025 wave on Steam.

0x0001000F and Steam Authorization Failure: the official fix →

Is Gray Zone Warfare on PS5, Xbox or Steam Deck?

Not yet. It's Windows-only on Steam. MADFINGER says a console release is part of its plans but it's focusing on PC for now. Steam Deck and Linux aren't officially supported: players can run it through Proton, but MADFINGER doesn't provide technical support for it.

What anti-cheat does Gray Zone Warfare use?

Easy Anti-Cheat, plus Denuvo code obfuscation since Update 0.3, which MADFINGER says is not the online DRM kind and doesn't need Denuvo's servers. Most launch errors with "anti-cheat" in them come from antivirus or Windows security software blocking Easy Anti-Cheat. In September 2026 MADFINGER published a security report saying it had found close to 40 accounts that deliberately used an item duplication exploit, and would suspend or wipe them.
