Gray Zone Warfare "This application requires Steam" (fix)

Launching shows "This application requires Steam", even with Steam open and signed in.

Also appears as: this application requires steam, gray zone warfare this application requires steam, grey zone warfare requires steam, gray zone warfare steam not running error

The game can't talk to the Steam client. MADFINGER's help centre says to always start it through Steam or a Steam shortcut, never from the game folder, and then work through a short checklist, trying the game after each step.

The usual culprits are a stale Steam cache, the game or Easy Anti-Cheat set to run as administrator when Steam isn't, or a peripheral driver interfering with Steam.

Fix it, step by step

  1. Reboot, sign back in to Steam and launch from your library

Restart your PC, log in to Steam, and start the game from the Steam library or a Steam shortcut, not from the game folder.

  2. Verify game files in Steam

Right-click Gray Zone Warfare > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.

  3. Delete the Steam folder in AppData\Local and relaunch Steam

Exit Steam fully (check the system tray), press Windows + R, enter %localappdata%, delete the Steam folder there, then relaunch Steam and log in.

  4. Make sure the game and Easy Anti-Cheat don't run as administrator

In the install folder, right-click GZWClientEAC.exe and GZW\Binaries\Win64\GZWClientSteam-Win64-Shipping.exe > Properties > Compatibility, and untick "Run as administrator" on both.

  5. Run Steam itself as administrator

Right-click steam.exe (by default in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam) > Properties > Compatibility, tick "Run as administrator" and click Apply.

  6. Unplug non-essential peripherals

MADFINGER says input-device drivers can interfere with Steam, so unplug anything you don't need and try again.
