Gray Zone Warfare "Out of video memory" crash: the fix

The game crashes with an "Out of video memory" or "low video memory" message, sometimes before reaching the title screen, even on a graphics card with plenty of VRAM.

Also appears as: out of video memory, low video memory, gray zone warfare out of video memory, grey zone warfare out of video memory, gray zone warfare 14900k crash, gray zone warfare 13900k crash

On Intel Core i9-13900K and 14900K systems, MADFINGER's help centre says this is a "well-documented known issue" with those CPUs in Unreal Engine 5 games, not a real shortage of video memory, and a motherboard BIOS update fixes it. Intel's BIOS fix for this instability also covers other 13th and 14th-gen desktop chips.

On other systems, MADFINGER's 2024 troubleshooting guide treats it as a driver problem: check the driver, reset NVIDIA's 3D settings, and turn off overlays.

Fix it, step by step

  1. On Intel 13th/14th-gen, update your motherboard BIOS

Download the latest BIOS from your motherboard maker (ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte, ASRock) and follow their update guide. MADFINGER strongly recommends this for 13900K and 14900K owners getting this crash.

  2. Update the GPU driver and reset NVIDIA 3D settings

Install the latest GPU driver, then in NVIDIA Control Panel > Manage 3D settings > Global Settings, click Restore. This is from MADFINGER's 2024 troubleshooting guide.

  3. Turn off NVIDIA Instant Replay and the in-game overlay

Disable Instant Replay and the overlay in the NVIDIA app, per the same official guide.

  4. Let Windows manage the page file size

MADFINGER's help centre recommends ticking "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives" (Settings > search "performance" > Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows > Advanced > Virtual memory > Change), with enough free disk space, then restarting. MADFINGER gives this as a general crash fix; it isn't specific to this error.
