AION 2 "Unhandled Exception" crash: what it means (fix)

AION 2 closes with a dialog starting "Unhandled Exception: EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION reading address 0x..." or "writing address 0x...", then a line such as "AION2.exe + 0x...", a long hash, a list of stack lines and "Crash in runnable thread" followed by a thread name (Background Worker #4, FAsyncLoadingThread and so on).

Also appears as: unhandled exception, aion 2 unhandled exception, Unhandled Exception: EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION, EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION, crash in runnable thread, Crash in runnable thread Background Worker, aion 2 access violation, aion 2 crashes every hour

This is a generic Unreal Engine crash dialog, not a single error code. The address, the module (AION2.exe, VCRUNTIME140.dll or libcef.dll) and the thread name differ from one report to the next, so players are hitting it for more than one reason. At least six players posted it in four Steam Discussions threads between 30 September and 9 October, one of them crashing every hour or two. NCSoft hasn't commented on it.

Most likely this is a fault on your PC or in the game's own memory handling, but that is our reading, not a confirmed cause. The only fix anyone reported is a single player's: clearing the NVIDIA shader cache and verifying files cured a crash on loading a cutscene. It is one report and hasn't been repeated.

Fix it, step by step

  1. Clear the NVIDIA shader cache and verify game files (one report)

One player on NVIDIA (Steam thread, 6 October) got the dialog every time the game tried to load a cutscene, with "Crash in runnable thread FAsyncLoadingThread". They deleted their NVIDIA shader cache except the protected files, turned off the NVIDIA overlay and verified the game files, and the crash stopped. The cache is in the NVIDIA folder under %localappdata%, not the roaming AppData folder. They also advise setting a cache size so the game has room to rebuild it. They think the overlay probably wasn't the cause. This is one report; nobody has confirmed it.

  2. Verify the game files in Steam (unconfirmed)

In Steam, right-click AION 2, open Properties, then Installed Files and choose Verify integrity of game files. The player above suspects a patch left a corrupt file. In the "Crashes all day" thread another player answered a crash report with just "verify the files", and nobody replied saying it worked.

  3. Note

There is no confirmed fix for this dialog. NCSoft hasn't addressed it. The reports differ: one crashes every hour or two in "Background Worker #6", and another names libcef.dll and could not get back in after a freeze. If your dialog says "UE-AION2 Game has crashed" instead, see that page. If you also get "GPU Crash dump Triggered", see the GPU crash page; two of the players in the "Crashes all day" thread posted both.
