AION 2 GPU crash DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED mid-session

The game crashes after a while in play, with "GPU Crash dump Triggered" and "DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED", or "GameThread timed out waiting for RenderThread after 120.00 secs" (RenderingThread.cpp). Some players crash just by pressing Esc.

Also appears as: DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED, GPU Crash dump Triggered, GameThread timed out waiting for RenderThread after 120.00 secs, aion 2 gpu crash, aion 2 crash when pressing esc

These are Unreal Engine 5 graphics-driver crashes on your PC, not disconnects from NCSoft's servers. About seven players reported them across several Steam Discussions threads in the first days of Early Access. Several are on high-end hardware (RTX 5070 and 5090 GPUs with AMD X3D CPUs), so this isn't just older PCs struggling.

The only fix with any support is turning off the Discord and Steam overlays. It worked for two players and not for a third. NCSoft hasn't acknowledged it.

What to try

  1. 01

Turn off the Discord and Steam overlays (two reports)

Disable the in-game overlay in Discord (User Settings → Game Overlay) and in Steam (right-click AION 2 → Properties → General). This worked for two players and didn't help a third.

    No broader fix confirmed yet

Nothing else has been confirmed for this crash so far. If you crash at startup with "PresentInternal(SyncInterval) failed" instead, that's a different problem with its own fix. See that page.
