Updating a Valheim dedicated server with SteamCMD ends with "Error! App '896660' state is 0x6 after update job."

Also appears as: App '896660' state is 0x6 after update job, valheim server state is 0x6, valheim dedicated server update error, valheim steamcmd 0x6, valheim dedicated server won't update 1.0.20, Update state (0x0) unknown

This is a SteamCMD error on the machine that hosts the Valheim dedicated server, so it is on the host's side, not an Iron Gate outage. A Steam Discussions thread from October 15 has a host whose update failed after patch 1.0.20 with "Update state (0x0) unknown, progress: 0.00 (0/0)" and then the 0x6 error.

The poster could not fix the update itself, but got the server running by renaming the server folder and running the same SteamCMD commands again. A second host with the same error said they would try it; no result yet.

Fix it, step by step

  1. Back up your world files before renaming anything (precaution)

    Before touching the server folder, copy your world files somewhere safe. In the thread the poster says they "didn't touch the folder where the my saved files are located", so their world loaded fine, but the thread does not say where that folder is on your setup. Check your server's start script for the world save location first. This is our precaution, not something a source tested.

  2. Rename the server folder and rerun the SteamCMD install (one report)

    Rename your existing dedicated server folder (the poster kept it as a backup), then run the same SteamCMD commands again: force_install_dir pointing at the old path, login anonymous, app_update 896660 validate. Because the path no longer exists, SteamCMD downloads a fresh copy of the latest version. The poster, Nougan, says "my server and it's saved world loaded up without problem". It is one report on a Windows host.

  3. Note

    A second player ([VR]MarsupH) reported the same error and replied that they would do this. They had not come back with a result when we checked on October 18, so only the original poster has confirmed the fix. Iron Gate has not commented in the thread.
