AION 2 "PresentInternal(SyncInterval) failed" crash (fix)

After the NC logo the game goes to a black screen or closes with "LowLevelFatalError [File:...D3D12Util.cpp] [Line: 1153] PresentInternal(SyncInterval) failed at ...D3D12Viewport.cpp:642 with error DXGI_ERROR_INVALID_CALL". A variant ends "with error 80004004".

Also appears as: PresentInternal(SyncInterval) failed, D3D12Util.cpp line 1153, DXGI_ERROR_INVALID_CALL, LowLevelFatalError D3D12Util.cpp, aion 2 black screen after nc logo, 80004004

This is a refresh-rate problem, not a broken install. Four players in Steam Discussions fixed it by changing their monitor's refresh rate in Windows (75→60 Hz, 240→120 Hz, 360→60 Hz). After that the game started normally.

One of them traced the cause. AION 2 saves its graphics settings to Steam Cloud, so settings created on another device (in his case an Xbox Ally X handheld) followed him to a laptop that can't run that refresh rate. Reinstalling doesn't clear them, because Steam Cloud downloads them again. NCSoft hasn't acknowledged it.

Fix it, step by step

  1. Change your monitor refresh rate in Windows

Open Settings → System → Display → Advanced display and pick a different refresh rate (for example, 60 Hz or 120 Hz), then launch the game. This fixed the crash for four players in two Steam threads. Once you're in, you can set the rate back and choose it in the game's own settings.

  2. Turn off Steam Cloud for AION 2 if you play on two devices

In Steam, right-click AION 2 → Properties → General and turn off Steam Cloud, so graphics settings from another PC or handheld stop syncing to this one. The player who found the cause used this as his workaround.

  3. Note

Before finding the refresh-rate fix, one reporter tried reinstalling the game, updating drivers and updating the BIOS. None of it helped.
