Deadlock is playable on Steam, but Steam doesn't publish a live player count for it, so there's no number to corroborate reports with.

About Deadlock's servers

Deadlock is Valve’s free third-person hero shooter with MOBA lanes, built on Source 2 for Windows. It leaked through playtesters in May 2024, got its Steam page in August 2024, and is still an invite-only playtest: existing players invite Steam friends, and the store page lists the release date as “To be announced”. Valve removed the playtest’s NDA when the store page went up, so players discuss bugs and outages openly.

Despite the invite gate it’s one of Steam’s biggest multiplayer games. The City Never Sleeps update on September 30, 2026 added six heroes (released two a week) and reworked the map’s districts. TechTimes, citing SteamDB, reported a record 228,086 concurrent players that day, beating the 171,490 peak from September 2024.

Valve runs no status page. Patches appear in the Changelog section of the official forum at forums.playdeadlock.com, on no fixed schedule, and matchmaking chooses your region (North America, Europe, Asia, South America or Oceania) automatically. Connection trouble tends to follow big updates, and the most common message is “Deadlock Network Offline”.

Maintenance, queues, and real outages

Three different things get reported as "Deadlock is down," and only one of them is an outage. The chart above is the fastest way to tell them apart, once there's data on it:

A real outage

Reports spike hard within an hour, then decay as the problem is fixed. Nobody announced it in advance.

Scheduled maintenance

Reports climb steadily and stay flat for the length of the window, because everyone hits the same wall at the same time and keeps hitting it.

A login queue

Matchmaking/login reports climb while server-connection reports stay low, and a Steam player count (if shown above) holds flat instead of dropping. The servers are up and full, not down — waiting is the only fix.

Announced maintenance would show up at the studio's own status channel before it shows up here.

If it's only broken for you

Most "is it down" moments aren't outages. Work down this list before assuming the servers are the problem — it's ordered by how often each one turns out to be the answer, not by how easy it is.

  1. 01

Check the report count above first

It costs nothing and it settles the question. A flat report count means other players are getting in fine, and everything below is worth your time. A spike means it isn't you, and none of it is.

  2. 02

    Verify the game files

In Steam: right-click Deadlock → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. A partial patch is the single most common cause of a game that launches and then fails to connect.

  3. 03

Restart the whole chain, in order

Game, then your launcher/Steam, then your router. People almost always do the first and skip the third — a stale router NAT table produces exactly the symptom people report as "servers down."

  4. 04

Rule out a VPN or restrictive network

A VPN fails matchmaking far more often than it fixes it, and so does a corporate or campus network that blocks the UDP ports a game server needs. If you're on a network you don't administer, that's the likely answer.

  5. 05

If it crashes rather than fails to connect, treat it as a crash

A game that starts and then dies, rather than never connecting, is usually a local fault — most often graphics drivers or overlay software, not the servers.

Deadlock server status: common questions

Is Deadlock down right now?

As of 01:13 UTC, 0 players have reported a problem in the last 15 minutes — counted as people, so repeat taps from one person don't inflate it. This page updates on every load.

Does Valve publish an official Deadlock status page?

No. Valve has no status dashboard for Deadlock and no confirmed official X account for it. The official channel is the Changelog section of Valve's own Deadlock forum (forums.playdeadlock.com), where a Valve developer posts every patch, plus the Steam news hub for app 1422450. The large Deadlock Discord is community-run, not Valve's. If the game won't connect and nothing is posted in the Changelog, check player reports on this page before assuming it's your connection.

When does Deadlock update, and is there scheduled maintenance?

There's no fixed schedule. Valve's Changelog shows patches landing irregularly, roughly every two to six weeks through 2026 (January 30, March 6, March 21 and 25, April 10 and 30, May 22, June 30, August 12 and 22, September 16 and 29), on no set weekday and with no announced downtime window. Servers have been open around the clock since September 2024, per Dexerto, so short connection problems cluster around big updates rather than a weekly maintenance slot.

Why can't I just download and play Deadlock?

Deadlock is still an invite-only playtest. Its Steam store page says access "is currently limited to friend invites via our playtesters", and the release date is listed as "To be announced". Anyone already in the playtest can invite a Steam friend; once invited, the game appears in your Steam library for free. There's no open beta or paid early access.

What server regions does Deadlock have, and can I choose one?

Matchmaking picks your region automatically. Dexerto and Game Rant list five regions: North America, Europe, Asia, South America and Oceania. In 2024 a console command (citadel_region_override) let players override the choice for one session, but players on Valve's own forum reported in mid-2026 that it no longer has any effect, and Valve hasn't commented. Treat region choice as automatic.

Why doesn't this page show a live Deadlock player count?

Steam doesn't publish one for Deadlock through its public player-count API, which answers "no count" for the app while it's in playtest, so there's no live number to show here. Record peaks are still tracked from Steam's own charts: TechTimes, citing SteamDB, reported a new all-time high of 228,086 concurrent players on September 30, 2026, the day of the City Never Sleeps update, beating the 171,490 peak from September 2024.

Is Deadlock on console, Mac or Steam Deck?

No official support beyond Windows. Deadlock is a Windows game built on Valve's Source 2 engine, and Valve hasn't announced console or Mac versions. Some players run it on Linux and Steam Deck through Proton, but Valve doesn't list either as supported, so launch problems there aren't covered by the fixes on this site.

Does Deadlock have anti-cheat?

Yes. Valve added an anti-cheat system in a September 2024 update, alongside in-game reporting, per Dexerto, and it's known for turning detected cheaters into frogs mid-match before banning them. Players also see "Valve Anti-Cheat" challenge timeouts that disconnect them from matches. Those aren't bans, and Valve hasn't explained them.

Why does Deadlock crash with a FATAL ERROR since the update?

Almost always because of mods or a community FPS config. The September 2026 update changed the game files they replace, and players in the Deadlock Community Discord have been getting FATAL ERROR dialogs at launch since: most often "Unable to find child 'ShopFilter' in layout file", plus KV3 parsing and gameinfo.gi errors. Disable your mods, remove the config and verify the game files in Steam to restore the originals.

Deadlock says I'm not signed in to Steam, but I am. What's wrong?

That's the "Failed To Create Party" error. It means the game can't reach Valve's relay network from your PC, not that you're signed out. Around 16 players reported it on Valve's Deadlock forum in early 2026, and the fix that worked for the most of them was running the game's project8.exe directly as administrator instead of launching through Steam.
