Deadlock FATAL ERROR: content file ".vpk" is corrupt (fix)

Deadlock closes at launch with "FATAL ERROR: Content file '…\game\citadel\maps\dl_hideout.vpk' is corrupt. Verify integrity of game files.", or a similar message naming a pak or vpk file.

Also appears as: deadlock content file is corrupt, deadlock fatal error citadel01.pak, deadlock fatal error citadel01pak, deadlock pak01.vpk is corrupt, deadlock verify integrity of game files, deadlock a file is corrupt every launch, deadlock corruption of files

Players get a FATAL ERROR naming one of Deadlock's own content files (a .vpk or pak file) as corrupt, sometimes on every launch. Steam threads from September 22 to October 10 and several r/DeadlockTheGame posts describe it. Valve hasn't commented that we could find.

Verifying the game files is the most common answer, and a player on r/DeadlockTheGame confirmed it for a launch crash after the update. Others say verifying only works until the next launch. One player fixed it by deleting the pak files by hand and rescanning, and another found a faulty RAM stick behind a pak01.vpk error.

Fix it, step by step

  1. Verify Deadlock's files in Steam

In Steam, right-click Deadlock > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. The error itself tells you to do this. On r/DeadlockTheGame one player was told to verify after a launch crash following the update, and another replied that it was what they had to do. One player says it only fixes the error until the next launch, and another says verifying keeps re-downloading the same files.

  2. Delete the named pak or vpk files by hand, then verify again

On r/DeadlockTheGame a player whose reinstalls didn't help was told to delete the pak files manually and then rescan. The original poster said it worked, though they didn't know why. Delete only the file named in your error dialog, then run Verify integrity of game files so Steam downloads a fresh copy.

  3. Test your RAM and turn off XMP/EXPO (one report)

In a Steam thread about pak01.vpk being corrupt, a reply said the error usually comes from unstable RAM or an aggressive XMP/EXPO overclock. The original poster then found a faulty RAM stick and ran with fewer sticks. This is one player's report, and the reply's claim about the cause is unverified.

  4. Note

Fatal errors that name layout files, KV3 data or gameinfo.gi come from mods or FPS configs rather than a corrupt file. See the Deadlock mods FATAL ERROR page.

  5. Note

No official fix yet; this page will be updated. Valve hasn't said why files become corrupt, and some players say it returns after every launch.
