Deadlock "Error in Init() of interface RenderDeviceMgr001" (fix)

After switching the renderer to Vulkan, Deadlock won't start and shows "AppSystemDict: Error in Init() of interface 'RenderDeviceMgr001'" (or "Error in Connect() of interface 'RenderDeviceMgr001'").

Also appears as: renderdevicemgr001, appsystemdict error in init() of interface renderdevicemgr001, error in connect() of interface renderdevicemgr001, deadlock vulkan won't launch, deadlock vulkan crash

The game can't start its Vulkan renderer on your PC, and because the setting is saved, it fails the same way on every launch. Verifying the game files and reinstalling didn't help the player who started the Steam Discussions thread on it. Two players there got back in by deleting the Vulkan renderer DLL, which forces the game back to DirectX. One Intel Arc owner fixed it with a driver update.

Fix it, step by step

  1. Delete rendersystemvulkan.dll to force DirectX

Open Steam > Deadlock > Manage > Browse local files, go to game\bin\win64\, delete (or rename) rendersystemvulkan.dll and launch the game. Two players in the Steam Discussions thread confirmed this got them back in. A later Steam update or file verification restores the file, so switch the renderer back to DirectX in settings once you're in.

  2. Update your GPU driver, especially on Intel Arc (one report)

One Intel Arc A770 owner on Valve's forum fixed it by updating to driver 32.0.101.5768 or newer. The same player had tried clearing the Vulkan cache and editing boot.vcfg, and neither worked.
