Deadlock "FATAL ERROR" at launch after the update (mods & FPS configs)

Since the September 2026 update, Deadlock closes at launch with a FATAL ERROR dialog, most often "Unable to find child 'ShopFilter' in layout file 'panorama\layout\citadel_hud_hero_shop.xml'". Other versions name "Error parsing KV3 data in 'scripts/abilities.vdata'", "Unable to load layout file … hud.xml" or "Application unable to load gameinfo.gi file".
Also appears as: deadlock fatal error, unable to find child shopfilter in layout file panorama layout citadel_hud_hero_shop.xml, deadlock error parsing kv3 data, deadlock unable to load layout file hud.xml, deadlock application unable to load gameinfo.gi file, deadlock fps config fatal error, deadlock mods not working after update
Every report we found came from a player running mods, a mod manager or a community "FPS config" that swaps game files. The September 29–30 update changed the files those mods and configs replace, and the old versions now stop the game from loading. In the Deadlock Community Discord's help, modding and general channels, more than a dozen players posted these dialogs in the first two days after the update. Several said a config its author called update-ready still failed. Old gameinfo.gi edits that used to enable mods or a wider field of view also stopped working. Valve's changelog doesn't mention mods, so waiting on a patch won't fix it. The same pattern showed up on the game's subreddit the day of the update. Remove the files and restore the game's own.
Fix it, step by step
Disable your mods and remove any FPS config
Turn off every mod in your mod manager and delete any FPS or performance config you copied into the game folder. Every player reporting these errors had one or the other installed.
Verify Deadlock's files in Steam
In Steam, right-click Deadlock > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. This restores the original gameinfo.gi and HUD layout files. The game's own hud.xml error dialog recommends validating your install through Steam.
If verifying doesn't help, uninstall and reinstall (one report)
One player on the game's subreddit said verifying the files didn't clear a config-related launch crash after the update, but a full uninstall and reinstall did.
- NoteReported
Players in the Discord's modding channel said the old gameinfo.gi edits and some configs described as updated still fail after this patch. Add mods back one at a time, and only after their authors confirm they work with the September 2026 update.
Sorted. Glad that worked.
