Deadlock error 126: unable to load module tier0 (fix)

Launching from Steam shows "Unable to Start Game – A game file appears to be missing or corrupted", then "CAppSystemDict:Unable to load module tier0 (Dependency of VApplication001), error 126". A variant names filesystem_stdio instead of tier0.

Also appears as: deadlock error 126, unable to load module tier0 deadlock, cappsystemdict unable to load module tier0 dependency of vapplication001 error 126, unable to load module filesystem_stdio error 126, deadlock a game file appears to be missing or corrupted

Windows couldn't load one of the game's core engine files when Steam started it. The eight players in the Valve forum thread on it found that verifying files, reinstalling the Visual C++ runtimes, updating drivers and reinstalling the game didn't help. Starting the game's own executable directly did. Most reports are from August to October 2024, and one player said a later game update cleared it, so it may be rarer now.

Fix it, step by step

  1. Start project8.exe directly instead of through Steam

With Steam running, open Steam > Deadlock > Manage > Browse local files, go to game\bin\win64\ and double-click project8.exe. More than one player in the forum thread said this got them into the game.

  2. Check again after the next game update (one report)

One reporter said the error stopped by itself after a game update.

  3. Note

Verifying files, reinstalling the Visual C++ runtimes, updating drivers and reinstalling Deadlock all failed for players in the thread, so skip straight to the step above.
