Deadlock "Network Offline": what it means and what to try

"Deadlock Network Offline" flashes up at launch and the client quits, or it appears on the main menu after you're dropped out of a match.

Also appears as: deadlock network offline, network offline deadlock, deadlock network offline error, is deadlock down, deadlock kicked from match network offline

The message means the game client can't reach Valve's Deadlock network. That can be Valve's side or yours, and nothing in the message says which. If lots of players are reporting problems on the live status page at the same moment, it's Valve's servers and there's nothing to fix locally. If it's only you, players on Valve's Deadlock forum found the version that hits at launch cleared after a full PC restart followed by a Steam update. Valve hasn't commented on the error in any thread we found, and most of the reports date from 2024 to early 2025.

Fix it, step by step

  1. Check whether other players are reporting it right now

Check this game's live status page (/deadlock/) and Valve's Changelog on forums.playdeadlock.com. A spike in reports, or a patch posted in the last hour, means it's Valve's side: wait and retry rather than troubleshooting your PC.

  2. Restart your PC, then let Steam update before launching

Restart the PC fully, open Steam first and let it install any client update, then launch Deadlock. Two reporters in the forum's "Deadlock Network Offline" thread said this cleared the error at launch.

  3. Note

When it appears after being dropped out of a live match, only one reporter has described it, and nothing they tried worked. If it happens repeatedly with no reports from other players, post in the Bug Reports section of forums.playdeadlock.com.
