AION 2 error 40309:500 — Cannot Register Security Settings

While trying to register security settings on a PURPLE/NCSoft account — usually while attaching a phone number — the site or client shows exactly: "A temporary error has occurred. Please try again later. (40309:500)". Retrying, refreshing and waiting do not clear it.
This is the single highest-demand technical thread found in this research — 42 comments, almost entirely from players stuck on the same step. It is a registration failure on NCSoft's/PURPLE's side rather than anything wrong with your PC: the error fires before you ever reach the game client, purely from the account/phone-verification flow, and no general cause or universal fix has been established. The most-repeated workaround is regional: selecting Canada as the country for a US +1 phone number reportedly got past it for two separate players, while plenty of others said website registration kept failing regardless of country choice. Two smaller threads echo the same instability around this step — one where a commenter got past verification by creating a Taiwan-region PURPLE account and receiving the code on a Canadian number (the original poster of that thread never confirmed it worked for them), and another where changing the PURPLE client's connection route from the US to Taiwan cleared a related "temporary error" blocking the update server, for the original poster and roughly two others — though only one of them explicitly retested it recently, so treat that route as unverified rather than a standing fix. There is also a distinct, separate failure worth not confusing with this one: at least one commenter received their one-time code and could not link it to their PC, hitting a different error — "A temporary Error has occurred. Please try again later. (101702)" — instead of 40309:500. No fix for that variant turned up in the inspected replies.
