While trying to register security settings on a PURPLE/NCSoft account — usually while attaching a phone number — the site or client shows exactly: "A temporary error has occurred. Please try again later. (40309:500)". Retrying, refreshing and waiting do not clear it.

This is a registration failure on NCSoft's/PURPLE's side, not your PC: error 40309:500 fires during account or phone-number verification, before you reach the game client. No general cause has been established.

It's the highest-demand technical thread found in this research — 42 comments, almost all from players stuck at this step — but no universal fix emerged. Smaller threads describe the same instability at this step, and none of the workarounds reported there has been verified as a standing fix.

A different error, "A temporary Error has occurred. Please try again later. (101702)", can appear instead if you receive a one-time code but can't link it to your PC. No fix for that variant turned up.

What to try

    Select Canada instead of the US when registering a phone number

    If you're registering a US +1 phone number, try selecting Canada as the country instead of the United States. Two separate players reported this got them past the 40309:500 error where the US option did not.

    Try switching PURPLE's connection route from US to Taiwan (long shot)

    If the country swap doesn't help, there is no other established fix for website registration — multiple other players reported it still failing regardless of which country they picked. A couple of players in adjacent threads reported that changing their PURPLE client's connection route from the US to Taiwan cleared a similarly-worded "temporary error" blocking their update server, but only one of them confirmed it still works as of this writing, so treat it as a long-shot rather than a reliable fix for this specific code.

    No working fix exists yet for the separate (101702) error

    If you instead receive a one-time code but can't link it to your PC, and the error you see reads (101702) rather than (40309:500), that is a different, unresolved issue — no working fix for it turned up in the threads checked for this page.
