RuneScape: Dragonwilds "mismatched build" error joining a session

You can see a friend's or public world listed in the Worlds screen, but trying to join it throws a "mismatched build" message — even when every player involved reports being fully up to date. Most reported in cross-platform (crossplay) groups.

Also appears as: dragonwilds mismatched build, dragonwilds mismatched build error, runescape dragonwilds error mismatched build, dragonwilds cant join server mismatched build

This is a different problem from a dedicated server that never appears in the Public tab at all (see [that page](/runescape-dragonwilds/errors/server-not-showing-up/) for the silent version-mismatch case, where a server just vanishes from the list with no error). This one shows an explicit "mismatched build" message on a world you can already see and are actively trying to join. The clearest documented case is on the game's own wiki: a player on Nintendo Switch 2 trying to join PlayStation-hosted friends wrote "everyone is up to date on updates but its telling me the server is mismatched build. other people are able to join but not me" — meaning everyone believed they were current, yet one platform's client still disagreed. A wiki moderator directed the report to the official Discord's bug-reports channel rather than pointing to a known fix, so there's no confirmed cause yet. The likeliest explanation, based on Jagex's own acknowledged pattern elsewhere (see this game's crossplay patch-rollout note on the [world save corruption page](/runescape-dragonwilds/errors/world-save-corrupted/)): console platforms don't all finish approving a Jagex patch at the same moment PC players get it, so one player's console can genuinely be on an older build while believing it's current. That's a plausible mechanism, not a confirmed one for this specific error.

What to try

  1. 01If this happens in a cross-platform group, check whether every platform involved has actually finished processing the latest patch — console and Switch platforms can lag behind PC by hours or days after a Jagex update, which looks identical to a version mismatch from inside the game.Unconfirmed
  2. 02Have everyone fully close and relaunch the game — and restart a dedicated server, if one is involved — to force a fresh version check rather than relying on a cached one.Unconfirmed
  3. 03Report it in the official Discord's #bug-reports channel. The game's own wiki moderators direct this exact error there rather than to a documented fix, which is the clearest sign this hasn't been resolved publicly yet.Unconfirmed
