RuneScape 3 on Mac: "The game cannot be opened"
On a Mac, opening RuneScape shows "The game cannot be opened" and the client does not start.
Also appears as: The game cannot be opened, runescape the game cannot be opened mac, runescape mac cannot be opened, runescape mac wont open, RuneScape.app cannot be opened
Jagex's support article for this message is a RuneScape article, not tagged for Old School, and its fix is a Terminal command. Open Terminal from Applications and Utilities, then enter the command xattr -r -d com.apple.quarantine /Applications/RuneScape.app/ exactly as Jagex gives it. Jagex also says you can try running the downloaded executable directly, or running it from the .dmg file. Jagex does not explain the cause in the article. From its name, the command clears the quarantine flag macOS puts on downloaded apps; that is our reading, not Jagex's explanation.
What to try
