RuneScape 3: client error during graphics initialisation
A pop-up says "The RuneScape client suffered from an error during graphics initialisation" and the desktop client won't load.

Jagex lists this exact message in its Client issues article, where the first fix is to update your programs, drivers and operating system. Its RuneScape Vulkan Beta article, which is RuneScape-only and covers Windows, adds that a similar "The RuneScape client suffered from an error" pop-up may mean your graphics drivers need updating. If it persists, Jagex says to opt out of the Vulkan beta and try OpenGL. This points at your graphics drivers or graphics mode, not at Jagex's servers.
What to try
- 01Update your graphics drivers, then restart the client. Jagex's Vulkan Beta article says this message may mean the drivers are out of date. Its Client issues article also says to update programs, drivers and your operating system.Confirmed
- 02If it still fails and you are in the Vulkan beta, opt out and switch the graphics mode to OpenGL. In the Jagex Launcher client, use the settings icon while it loads and set Graphics mode to OpenGL; on Steam, right-click RuneScape, open Properties, then Game Versions and Betas, and choose Default Public Version.Confirmed
- 03If the Launcher won't start the client at all, Jagex says you can change the renderer by editing the launcher preferences.cfg file in C:\ProgramData\Jagex\launcher. Change renderer=vulkan to renderer=opengl, or to renderer=angle for Compatibility Mode, save it and relaunch.Confirmed
