You select a character to log in with, the game appears to load, and then you're dropped straight back to the character select screen instead of loading into the world. Logging into the same character a second time right after usually works.

Also appears as: character select bounce back, kicked to character select, can't log into character monsters and memories, login loop monsters and memories, character won't load monsters and memories, dropped back to character select when entering zone

This is an officially acknowledged bug on the game's side, not your machine. Niche Worlds Cult's Known Issues tracker lists "Logging in a character sometimes immediately bounces back to character select, second attempt works" (reported July 13, last updated September 12, still open on October 26).

Patch 0.30.4.1 (October 21) says it "Fixes sometimes being dropped back to character select when entering zone", so the bounce when zoning should be gone once your launcher has updated. The patch notes don't mention the bounce at login, and the tracker entry for it hasn't been closed.

What to try

  1. 01

    Try logging into the same character again right away

    Select the same character and try logging in again right away — the developers' own Known Issues entry and support FAQ both note the second attempt usually works.

    Let the launcher update the game if the bounce happens when zoning

    If you're dropped back to character select when entering a zone rather than at login, close the game and open the launcher so it installs the latest patch. The 0.30.4.1 patch notes (October 21) list a fix for "sometimes being dropped back to character select when entering zone".

    Check the character select screen for a servers-closed notice

    If it keeps happening, check the notice on the character select screen first — the servers themselves may not be open for play, which looks similar to a stuck login.

    Remove and re-add your account in the launcher

    If servers are confirmed open and a specific character still won't load after multiple attempts, try removing your account from the launcher and adding it again — the official FAQ suggests your account session may have expired.
