The game stops with the error code "bryce-vigil" or "gill-gutpuncher". One player says bryce-vigil appears whenever the game updates.
Also appears as: bryce-vigil, bryce vigil, gill-gutpuncher, gill gutpuncher, gears e-day error code bryce-vigil, gears of war e-day xbox sign in error after update
The Coalition's open-beta known issues say both codes come from a mismatch between your PC's date and time settings and the local time. On Windows, it says to use "Sync Now" in Date & Time settings.
The October 5 patch notes list "Improved XBOX authentication handling when the system clock differs significantly from the correct time". They don't name these codes, so we can't say that patch fixes them.
One Steam thread from October 5 (no replies) says bryce-vigil appears whenever the game updates and works inconsistently.
Fix it, step by step
Use Sync Now in Windows Date & Time settings
The Coalition says the error is caused by a discrepancy between your hardware date and time settings and local time. In Windows, open Date & time settings and use "Sync Now" to align the system time to local time.
Update the game to the October 5 patch or later
The October 5 patch notes say XBOX authentication handling was improved for when the system clock differs significantly from the correct time. The note does not name bryce-vigil or gill-gutpuncher, so this is not a confirmed fix for them.
