Gears of War: E-Day Fatal Error on PC: NVIDIA Smooth Motion
On PC the anti-cheat screen appears, then the game freezes for about 30 seconds and closes, or it repeatedly shows "Fatal Error" at launch.

Players on PC report E-Day failing to start after the anti-cheat screen, or showing "Fatal Error", while NVIDIA Smooth Motion is turned on in the NVIDIA app. Turning it off let the game start for them, so this is a setting on your PC.
Two r/GearsOfWar posts (October 6 and 7) describe it. The first thread (25 comments) has the original poster confirming the fix repeatedly; the second has no replies. The Coalition hasn't commented.
Fix it, step by step
Turn off Smooth Motion in the NVIDIA app
In the NVIDIA app, disable Smooth Motion, then start the game. The original poster of the r/GearsOfWar thread wrote that the game "started right up after" and repeated the fix in several replies to others. A second poster said the same changed "Fatal Error" at every boot into a working game.
On AMD, turn off the equivalent frame feature and restore defaults (unconfirmed)
An AMD user in the thread was advised to disable the equivalent graphics feature and restore defaults. Nobody confirmed that it helped, and we don't know which AMD feature is meant.
