Arknights: Endfield on Steam starts at the prologue: link fix

You started Arknights: Endfield on Steam and landed at the prologue on a new account, or the email verification code for "Log in with existing account" never arrives. Or unlinking says "Unlinking failed. This account can only be unlinked from a Steam account once every 180 days."

The Steam version needs your Steam account linked to a Gryphline Account on first launch. Players who picked the wrong option, or used the wrong email, report ending up on a brand-new account at the prologue. That is a login choice on your side, not a server outage.
Gryphline's pinned Steam Account FAQ covers how to link an existing account, including Google, Facebook, Apple or PSN logins that have no email yet, and says to pick the server your character is on. It does not mention a verification code that fails to arrive; that comes only from player posts, with no confirmed fix.
If you linked the wrong account, players report a lock: unlinking fails with a 180-day message. The 180-day figure comes from players quoting the dialog, not from Gryphline's FAQ, which does not mention it.
Fix it, step by step
Choose [Log Into Existing Account & Link] on first launch
Gryphline's Account FAQ: on first launch of the Steam version you must link your Steam account to a Gryphline Account. If you already have a Gryphline Account, select [Log Into Existing Account & Link] and follow the on-screen instructions. [Register & Link] creates a new account, so a returning player who picks it starts at the prologue. Gryphline recommends logging in with your existing Gryphline Account to carry over progress from another platform.
Log in with the email linked to your Gryphline Account
Gryphline's Account FAQ, for players who first logged in with Facebook, Google, Apple or PSN: if that Gryphline Account already has an email address linked, select [Log In and Link an Existing Account] in the Steam version and log in with that email address to link your Steam account.
No email on the account? Link one in the Account Center first
Gryphline's Account FAQ: if the account you reach through a third-party login has no email address linked, first log in to the Gryphline Account Center with that original third-party account. Follow the on-screen instructions to link an email address that has not been used to register a Gryphline Account. Then select [Log In and Link an Existing Account] in the Steam version and log in with that email. A Google login alone is not an email login. One Steam reply says the same ("bind it first to your email, then login in steam using that email").
Select the server your existing character is on
Gryphline's Account FAQ: "Arknights: Endfield data cannot be shared between the Asia Server and Americas / Europe Server. When logging in, please be sure to select the server where your existing game character is located." The FAQ says the Steam version uses the same game servers and account data as the other platforms, so progress carries over on the matching server. Players have not reported a server mismatch as their cause; it is the official caveat.

No confirmed fix yet; this page will be updated. Gryphline's FAQ does not cover a code that fails to arrive. Two Steam posts describe it with no reply from Gryphline: "Gmail and verification code simply does not work. Using verification code confirms that my email is not active on graphline" (thread) and "why wont it send a code to my email to link it" (thread). The only reply, to the first, says to link your Google login to an email first (see the Account Center step above); the poster did not confirm that it worked. Make sure you are using an email linked to your Gryphline Account, not just your Google address.

Several players in a Steam thread titled "ACCOUNT TRANSFERS" (thread) quote the dialog "Unlinking failed. This account can only be unlinked from a Steam account once every 180 days" and say they cannot unlink a Steam account they linked by mistake. Others quote "the third-party account is already linked to another account" when trying to link an old Google login to the Steam account, and say the email login created a separate account. The 180-day rule comes from those player quotes; Gryphline's Account FAQ only says a Steam link can be removed in the Gryphline User Center and gives no time limit. A moderator replied "Go to the Gryphline Center and unlink your Steam account" (user.gryphline.com/userInfo), but one player says it fails with the 180-day message and another says the suggested steps "none of that actually works because of the multiple timed cooldowns". One player mentions a 14-day wait to delete an account (one report). So: pick the existing-account option before you link, because the link may be locked afterwards.

In a Steam thread where a returning player landed at the prologue (thread), one reply says Steam created a second, different Gryphline account, and to check which one has your progress and ask support for help. That is a player's reply, not a Gryphline statement, and the poster did not report it resolved. Gryphline Help Center: gryphline.helpshift.com. Gryphline's FAQ says a Steam link can be removed in the Gryphline User Center.
