Arkheron "unknown error" during launch or download (fix)

The game (playtest/demo build) stops partway through launching or downloading — commonly cited around the 16% mark — and shows a generic "unknown error" with no further detail.

Also appears as: arkheron unknown error, unknown error, arkheron error at 16%, arkheron crash on launch unknown error

This is a playtest/demo-era bug, reported independently in multiple Steam Discussions threads for Arkheron's early builds. A Bonfire Studios developer (Steam-tagged as the game's developer, posting under the handle "deolis") replied to one report asking the player to sync their PC's system clock — a classic fix for handshake/authentication failures that present as a generic error — and it worked. The same developer later confirmed the underlying bug "should be fixed now in latest demo build." If you're still on an older build or a fresh install and hit this, syncing your clock is the first thing to try before anything more drastic.

What to try

  1. 01Sync your PC's system clock (Windows: Settings > Time & Language > Date & time > Sync now). A Bonfire developer suggested this directly for this exact error and the reporting player confirmed it worked.Confirmed
  2. 02Update to the latest available build/patch. Bonfire has said this bug "should be fixed now in latest demo build" as of their most recent reply on the report.Confirmed
  3. 03If it persists on a current build, verify your game files through Steam's Properties menu, then report it in Steam Discussions or the official Discord with your build version — Bonfire staff actively monitor both.Reported
