Windrose freezes on the loading screen with the audio still playing, then shows "Application Hang Detected - The application has hung and will now close" and quits.

Also appears as: windrose application hang detected, windrose application hang, windrose the application has hung and will now close, windrose stuck on loading screen, windrose infinite loading screen application hang, windrose steam cloud save conflict

The loading screen freezes with the music still playing, then the game closes. About eight Steam threads from April to June describe it, and in an r/crosswind post (17 upvotes, 21 comments) verifying, new drivers and a reinstall all failed.

The best-supported workaround is setting global illumination, or all graphics, to Low: one player posted it and a second confirmed it. The developers haven't commented. Back up your saves before trying anything that touches them.

Fix it, step by step

  1. Set global illumination (or all graphics) to Low, then raise it again

On the character screen, open settings and set the global video settings to Low. One player says this let them into the game and that they could change it back afterwards, and a second player confirmed that lowering global illumination let it load fully. Two more posters got back in by lowering global illumination from Epic to Low, or by setting all graphics to low and capping the frame rate at 30 first.

  2. Reset the in-game graphics settings to default

One player in a Steam thread says resetting to default settings fixed it, and a second player said it worked for them too. Another says deleting the saved config worked, but their post doesn't say which folder.

  3. Update or clean-install your graphics drivers and restart

Two posters say updating the drivers and restarting the PC fixed it, and one of them used a clean install of the NVIDIA drivers. Another player in the same thread says their drivers were already updated and it made no difference.

  4. Create a new character in the same world, then reload the original (partial)

One player suggested creating a new character on the same world and then logging back into the original. Another reported that the new character loaded but their main save still failed, so this may only help some saves. On r/crosswind a commenter described a longer version that included finishing the tutorial and fast travelling to Tortuga.

  5. Back up your saves, then restore using the official FAQ if Steam shows a save conflict

Several threads connect the hang to Steam Cloud or save problems. Before changing anything, copy the whole SaveProfiles folder from %localappdata%\R5\Saved\ to a safe place. The game's official FAQ explains how to restore a save from its backups, and says to choose LOCAL FILES if Steam detects a save conflict after you turn Steam Cloud back on.

  6. Note

One poster advised turning off Steam Cloud and deleting the local SaveProfiles folder. A player who tried it said it deleted all their characters and worlds and did not fix the hang. Do not delete that folder without a backup, and do not treat it as a fix.
