Typing a friend's invite code into the "Join a Game" screen returns the dialog "An unexpected error occurred" instead of connecting, even though other players using the same code can get in fine.

A Windrose player reported this exact dialog text on Steam Discussions: typing an invite code for a friend's server returned "An unexpected error occurred" while every other friend using the same code connected without issue — meaning it's tied to that one player's client or network path, not the server or the code itself. This lines up with what Kraken Express's own April 2026 patch notes describe as the root cause of most invite-code failures that update: certain ISPs blocking parts of Windrose's networking backend, which the connectivity-server selection and Direct IP options added that patch were built specifically to work around.

Fix it, step by step

  1. Manually pick a different connectivity server

    Open the connectivity server selection menu (added in the April 19, 2026 patch) and manually pick a different server instead of relying on automatic selection — Kraken Express's patch notes note some servers may show as "available" even when unusable for your connection.

  2. Try Direct IP if no connectivity server works

    Try Direct IP as a workaround if none of the connectivity servers work for you — Kraken Express's notes specifically flag this option for cases "where ISPs block everything related to Windrose."

  3. Confirm you and your friend's server are on the same build

    Confirm your game and your friend's server are on the same build version; a version mismatch on Direct IP silently returns you to the main menu without an error, per the same patch notes, and a similar mismatch is a documented cause of failed invite-code joins generally.
