Valheim world corrupted, missing or LOAD ERROR after 1.0 (fix)

A world that saved normally now shows as corrupted, is missing from the world list, or its seed shows LOAD ERROR, and restoring backups fails or brings back an older state.

At least seven separate Steam Discussions threads between September 12 and September 25, 2026 describe this after the 1.0 update: worlds gone after a normal quit, worlds marked corrupted with backups that would not load, a world deleted again after being restored, and a base lost after using a portal. Several posters run Steam Cloud, one on a Steam Deck and one syncing two computers, while another rolled back a local save. None of those threads has a reply from Iron Gate, and its cause is unconfirmed. Iron Gate has acknowledged two save-related bugs in patch notes: Patch 1.0.14 (September 17) fixed a Steam Cloud state that could get stuck after a crash while saving, and fixed characters not saving correctly when you press Save on someone else's server. Iron Gate has not said those fixes cover the reports here.
What to try
- 01Update to the newest patch (1.0.16 as of September 25, 2026). Patch 1.0.14's notes list the Steam Cloud fix and the fix for characters not saving correctly when you press Save on someone else's server, both published at valheim.com/news/patch-1-0-14. Iron Gate has not said they cure worlds that are already corrupted.Confirmed
- 02Open Manage Saves and try restoring an earlier backup of the world; Iron Gate's patch notes refer to backups restorable from that menu. Results in the threads are mixed: one player got a world back by rolling back to a backup about six hours old, while others in the same and two other threads say none of their backups would load.Reported
- 03If you play on Steam, one player in the "World deleted upon logging back in" thread reports that turning Steam Cloud off for Valheim and keeping saves local stopped the losses for them, and says it only prevents new losses and does not recover a lost world. No one else confirmed it and Iron Gate has not commented on Steam Cloud as a cause.Reported
- 04Report it through the bug form on valheim.com/support. Iron Gate's pinned Steam post says that form is the only place it officially registers bugs, and lists known issues with priority and the version each was found in.Confirmed
