About Valheim's servers

Valheim is a co-op survival and exploration game for one to ten players, built by Iron Gate AB in Sweden and published by Coffee Stain Publishing. It first released in Early Access on February 2, 2021 and reached version 1.0 on September 9, 2026 with the Deep North biome, after roughly five and a half years in Early Access. Steam app id 892970 lists it for Windows, Mac and Linux, and Iron Gate’s FAQ lists Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 as well. Steam’s player counter read 177,435 players online at about 17:19 UTC on September 25, 2026.

Valheim has no central game servers. Iron Gate’s FAQ says worlds are either a peer-to-peer session you host from the game or a dedicated server you run yourself, and that the studio has no access to your worlds or characters. Crossplay runs on the backend that Iron Gate’s dedicated server guide names as PlayFab, a Microsoft service. Most “can’t connect” reports in Steam Discussions are about a version, a host or a crossplay setting, and none of the posts checked describes a studio outage.

There is no official status or uptime page for Valheim. Iron Gate announces patches and hotfixes at valheim.com/news and on Steam’s news hub, and the game’s Known Issues board lives inside the support hub at valheim.com/support. In the sixteen days since 1.0 there have been four patch and hotfix posts, and the notes for the latest three say each patch takes a few days to reach every platform while crossplay stays functional.

The pages here cover the problems players are reporting right now: version mismatches after a patch, failing to connect to a friend’s world, crossplay and PlayFab join failures, worlds that turn up corrupted or missing after 1.0, items wrongly marked as cheated, and item-stand items that lost their levels. Each page says who confirmed what, and the ones that rest on player reports alone are labelled that way.

Maintenance, queues, and real outages

Three different things get reported as "Valheim is down," and only one of them is an outage. The chart above is the fastest way to tell them apart, once there's data on it:

A real outage

Reports spike hard within an hour, then decay as the problem is fixed. Nobody announced it in advance.

Scheduled maintenance

Reports climb steadily and stay flat for the length of the window, because everyone hits the same wall at the same time and keeps hitting it.

A login queue

Matchmaking/login reports climb while server-connection reports stay low, and a Steam player count (if shown above) holds flat instead of dropping. The servers are up and full, not down — waiting is the only fix.

Announced maintenance would show up at the studio's own status channel or the official Discord before it shows up here.

If it's only broken for you

Most "is it down" moments aren't outages. Work down this list before assuming the servers are the problem — it's ordered by how often each one turns out to be the answer, not by how easy it is.

  1. 01

Check the report count above first

It costs nothing and it settles the question. A flat report count means other players are getting in fine, and everything below is worth your time. A spike means it isn't you, and none of it is.

  2. 02

    Verify the game files

In Steam: right-click Valheim → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. A partial patch is the single most common cause of a game that launches and then fails to connect.

  3. 03

Restart the whole chain, in order

Game, then your launcher/Steam, then your router. People almost always do the first and skip the third — a stale router NAT table produces exactly the symptom people report as "servers down."

  4. 04

Rule out a VPN or restrictive network

A VPN fails matchmaking far more often than it fixes it, and so does a corporate or campus network that blocks the UDP ports a game server needs. If you're on a network you don't administer, that's the likely answer.

  5. 05

If it crashes rather than fails to connect, treat it as a crash

A game that starts and then dies, rather than never connecting, is usually a local fault — most often graphics drivers or overlay software, not the servers.

Valheim server status: common questions

Is Valheim down right now?

As of 19:41 UTC, 0 players have reported a problem in the last 15 minutes — counted as people, so repeat taps from one person don't inflate it. This page updates on every load.

Does Valheim have an official server status page?

No. Iron Gate's support hub at valheim.com/support has bug-report, feedback and translation forms, a Known Issues list and a handful of help articles, but no live status or uptime page, and none of the last 25 posts in Steam's news feed for app 892970 (October 2025 to September 2026) is an outage notice. Iron Gate's own FAQ says it does not provide any official servers, so there is no central service for a status page to describe. Patch and hotfix notes are posted at valheim.com/news and on the Steam news hub. On this site, "status" therefore means what to check when you cannot connect: your game version against the current patch, whether the world runs on the Steam or the crossplay backend, and, for crossplay, Microsoft's PlayFab status page at status.playfab.com.

Who hosts a Valheim world, and what does it mean when I can't connect?

You or someone you know does. Iron Gate's FAQ says you can start your own peer-to-peer play session, public or private, or run a persistent world with the Valheim Dedicated Server application from Steam, and that Iron Gate provides no official servers and has no access to your saved worlds or characters. Servers are capped at 10 players. So a failed connection usually points at the host's version, the host's network or the crossplay setting, not at a studio outage; if a friend or a hosting company runs the server, ask them first. The linked page lists what has been reported and what Iron Gate has said.

Does crossplay use PlayFab, and how does Steam affect "can't connect"?

Yes, crossplay runs on Microsoft's PlayFab. Iron Gate's dedicated server guide says a server started without the -crossplay argument uses the Steam backend, so only Steam users can see and join it, and its port range (default 2456-2457) has to be reachable through port forwarding. With -crossplay the server runs on PlayFab through a relay, needs no port forwarding, and can be joined by join code, public IP and port, or the server list, but not by a local or loopback IP. Xbox players can join a dedicated server only if both the console and the server have crossplay on, and Iron Gate's Crossplay FAQ says a missing crossplay option may be a parental-control setting. Iron Gate has not published anything about a PlayFab outage in the posts checked up to September 25, 2026.

Valheim crossplay not working: what to check →

What does "Incompatible version" mean, and how do I check the current version?

It means the Valheim build on your client and the build on the server you are joining are different. Iron Gate has no page describing the message; server logs that players posted in Steam Discussions show a "VERSION check" line comparing the two, and a "Valheim version:" line when the server starts. The newest patch as of September 25, 2026 is 1.0.16, listed at valheim.com/news. Iron Gate's 1.0.14, 1.0.15 and 1.0.16 posts each say the patch takes a few days to reach every platform while crossplay keeps working, so a console build being a patch behind is not by itself the cause. In the Steam threads checked, the cause players describe is a dedicated server that did not actually update.

Where are Valheim patches posted, and how often do they come?

At valheim.com/news and on the Steam news hub for app 892970. Since 1.0 launched on September 9, 2026, the notes list Hotfix 1.0.10 and 1.0.12 on September 11, Patch 1.0.14 on September 17, Patch 1.0.15 on September 18 and Patch 1.0.16 on September 25. Before 1.0 the cadence was far slower: Steam's feed shows Patch 0.221.10 on February 2, 2026, Patch 0.221.12 on February 19 and a Public Test build, 0.221.13, on May 6. Iron Gate's 1.0 FAQ said there would be no Public Test branch for 1.0 before release.

Can I lose a Valheim world or character to a patch, and what did Iron Gate say about it?

Iron Gate's 1.0 FAQ says existing saves stay where you left them and keep working, and the 1.0 notes describe a new save system built to survive a write failing halfway. Since then Iron Gate has confirmed two save-related problems: the 1.0.15 post says converting old worlds to the new format dropped upgrade levels and variants of items on item stands and armour stands (fixed for worlds converted from 1.0.12), and the 1.0.14 notes list a Steam Cloud state that could get stuck after a crash while saving. Separately, at least seven Steam Discussions threads between September 12 and September 25, 2026 describe worlds that turned up corrupted or missing; none of those threads has a reply from Iron Gate, and its cause has not been confirmed.

Valheim world corrupted or missing: what to try →

Where does Valheim keep saves, and do they sync between platforms?

Steam's store page lists Steam Cloud support. Iron Gate's 1.0 FAQ says the only cross-platform save access is Xbox saves reachable from a PC that launches the game from the Microsoft Store; beyond that there is no cross-platform sync of save files. Iron Gate's dedicated server guide gives a dedicated server's default save folder as AppData/LocalLow/IronGate/Valheim under your user profile on Windows and ~/.config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim on Linux (overridable with -savedir), and says a server keeps four automatic backups by default, one at 2 hours and three at 12-hour intervals.

What is the difference between hosting from the game and a dedicated server?

Per Iron Gate's FAQ, starting a world from the game creates a peer-to-peer session you host, while the Valheim Dedicated Server tool (Steam Library, Tools filter) runs a persistent world you configure in start_headless_server.bat, or start_server.sh on Linux. Iron Gate's guide says to stop a dedicated server with CTRL+C rather than the window's X button. You cannot run a dedicated server on an Xbox console, but an Xbox can join one when crossplay is on for both, and Microsoft Store owners run StartHeadlessServer.bat from the game's Server folder.

Crossplay and dedicated-server join problems →

Do mods keep working after a Valheim patch?

Not reliably. Iron Gate's 1.0 FAQ says there is no official mod support, that it cannot guarantee any mod works at 1.0, and that there will be no mod support on consoles and no Steam Workshop.

Why do my Valheim items show as "cheated" when I never used cheats?

Iron Gate has acknowledged it. Its 1.0 FAQ says items spawned with dev commands are flagged as cheated and that a character holding one is locked out of achievements until it throws them out, and its Patch 1.0.15 post (September 18, 2026) says some players have ordinary items wrongly marked, that the fix has to ship on all platforms at once to keep crossplay working, and that you can keep using those items meanwhile. The 1.0.16 notes from September 25 list no further fix for it.

Why did items on my item stands lose their upgrade levels after 1.0?

Iron Gate's Patch 1.0.15 post says the updated save format introduced in 1.0 loses the level and variant data of items on item stands and armour stands when a world is converted, that this was not caught in testing, and that it was fixed in Patch 1.0.12 for worlds converted from then on. For worlds already converted, it offers two backup-based workarounds, both of which are on the linked page.
