Rust crashes joining a server at "Spawning map" (fix)

Rust loads for a while after you pick a server, stalls at "Spawning map" or "spawn world", then crashes to desktop.

Also appears as: Rust crash spawning map, Rust crashes at spawn world, Rust crashes when joining a server, Rust crashes when loading into server, Rust won't load maps, Rust exe not responding joining server, Rust crash on RTX 5060 Ti, Rust crash on RTX 5080

This is a client crash on your PC while the map loads, not a server outage. There is no Facepunch statement about it, so everything here comes from players.

An October 8 Steam thread has RTX 5060 Ti and RTX 5080 owners crashing on every join, and one player there fixed it by turning DLSS off. In r/playrust, several threads describe the same crash while loading into a server, and in one the poster confirmed that turning off DLSS, DLAA and Nvidia Reflex fixed it.

Fix it, step by step

  1. Set DLSS to off in Rust, close the game fully, then relaunch

In Rust's graphics settings set DLSS to "off", then fully close the game (not just the menu) and start it again before joining a server. Player idiopathic reports this fixed a crash at "spawning map 915/32520" on an Nvidia RTX 50-series setup, and stresses the full restart. A separate r/playrust thread has one player reporting the same cause after "dlss was the cause".

  2. Turn off DLSS, DLAA and Nvidia Reflex

Turn off DLSS, DLAA and Nvidia Reflex, then try joining again. In an r/playrust thread about Rust crashing when loading into a server (Rust.exe "not responding"), this reply got 3 upvotes and the original poster said it worked.

  3. Turn DLAA off in the Nvidia Control Panel global settings (one report)

One reply in the same r/playrust "crashing at spawn world" thread says DLAA off in the global Nvidia Control Panel settings fixed it, and another user said it worked for them too. The original poster did not confirm.

  4. Delete the cfg and maps folders in the Rust install (one report)

One r/playrust player says deleting the cfg and maps folders in the Rust install folder helped at first, before they found DLSS was the cause. Another reply in a separate thread blamed a corrupted map file and advised clearing steamapps/common/rust/maps. Neither was confirmed by the original poster.

  5. Note

In one r/playrust thread the poster said DLSS was already off and Rust still crashed on every join, even after verifying files and reinstalling. Another Steam player says they have tried everything and maps still will not load, so this is not a guaranteed fix.
