About Rust's servers

Rust is a multiplayer survival game developed and published by Facepunch Studios. It has been on Steam (app id 252490) since its full release on February 8, 2018 per the store page, and Steam lists it for Windows and Mac. It is one of the larger games on Steam by concurrent players: about 123,600 were online when this page was last checked on September 25, 2026. Console players are on a separate edition that Double Eleven, not Facepunch, develops and supports.

Facepunch ships a content update on the first Thursday of every month, and said in its January 2026 devblog that it would keep doing so through the year. The default monthly server wipe timer in the game’s server settings is set to the same day, and Facepunch’s August 2026 devblog called September 3 “the September wipe”. The latest update at the time of writing, “Breach and Clear”, went out on September 3, 2026. Server owners can set their own weekly, biweekly or monthly wipe timers, so not every community server follows the monthly day.

Rust has no live status dashboard. Updates are announced in the monthly devblog at rust.facepunch.com/news and on the Steam news hub, and the official support FAQ says servers are sometimes down because Facepunch is updating them, because they crashed, or because of DDoS attacks. Because so many servers are run by community owners, “Rust is down” is often really “this one server is down” — Facepunch’s own support article on an empty server list explains that what you see depends on which servers answer you.

Facepunch documents a set of Easy Anti-Cheat and startup errors in its own Help Center, which is what the error pages here are built from. Rust has to be launched through Steam for Easy Anti-Cheat to load, and several of Facepunch’s fixes come down to the same few checks: verify the game files, let EAC’s servers through your firewall, and repair or reinstall EAC’s files.

Maintenance, queues, and real outages

Three different things get reported as "Rust is down," and only one of them is an outage. The chart above is the fastest way to tell them apart, once there's data on it:

A real outage

Reports spike hard within an hour, then decay as the problem is fixed. Nobody announced it in advance.

Scheduled maintenance

Reports climb steadily and stay flat for the length of the window, because everyone hits the same wall at the same time and keeps hitting it.

A login queue

Matchmaking/login reports climb while server-connection reports stay low, and a Steam player count (if shown above) holds flat instead of dropping. The servers are up and full, not down — waiting is the only fix.

Announced maintenance would show up at the studio's own status channel or the official Discord before it shows up here.

If it's only broken for you

Most "is it down" moments aren't outages. Work down this list before assuming the servers are the problem — it's ordered by how often each one turns out to be the answer, not by how easy it is.

  1. 01

Check the report count above first

It costs nothing and it settles the question. A flat report count means other players are getting in fine, and everything below is worth your time. A spike means it isn't you, and none of it is.

  2. 02

    Verify the game files

In Steam: right-click Rust → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. A partial patch is the single most common cause of a game that launches and then fails to connect.

  3. 03

Restart the whole chain, in order

Game, then your launcher/Steam, then your router. People almost always do the first and skip the third — a stale router NAT table produces exactly the symptom people report as "servers down."

  4. 04

Rule out a VPN or restrictive network

A VPN fails matchmaking far more often than it fixes it, and so does a corporate or campus network that blocks the UDP ports a game server needs. If you're on a network you don't administer, that's the likely answer.

  5. 05

If it crashes rather than fails to connect, treat it as a crash

A game that starts and then dies, rather than never connecting, is usually a local fault — most often graphics drivers or overlay software, not the servers.

Rust server status: common questions

Is Rust down right now?

As of 19:40 UTC, 0 players have reported a problem in the last 15 minutes — counted as people, so repeat taps from one person don't inflate it. This page updates on every load.

Does Rust have an official server status page?

No live status or uptime page was found. status.facepunch.com does not resolve (checked September 25, 2026), and the support FAQ at rust.facepunch.com/support doesn't point to one. Facepunch announces updates in its monthly devblog at rust.facepunch.com/news, which it also posts to the Steam news hub for app 252490, and the official site links the @playrust account on X (not checked for this page). Those are announcement feeds, not a status page. In a January 2018 post, Facepunch also said it had stayed quiet about a DDoS attack on purpose because acknowledging attacks tends to make them worse, so a silent news feed does not prove the servers are fine.

Why is my Rust server list empty, and how do I tell an official-server problem from a community-server problem?

Facepunch's "No servers showing" support article explains that the list isn't served from one central place: the client gets a list of Rust servers from Steam, then asks each server directly for basic info, and a server only appears if it answers you. So the list can differ between players, and a server that is being DDoSed, is far from you, or sits behind your own packet loss can look slow or missing. Facepunch's listed fixes include keeping Steam's "Server browser pings / minute" at 5000 or higher, launching regular Rust rather than the Staging Branch, opting out of betas, and joining by IP with the F1 console. Facepunch runs its own official servers and many other people run community servers; if only one server won't load while others do, that points at that server rather than the whole game, which is our reading, not a Facepunch statement. BattleMetrics is a third-party per-server tracker that Facepunch's article names as a way to find a server's IP, not an official status source.

What does Facepunch say when a Rust server is down?

The "The server I was playing on is down!" entry in the FAQ on rust.facepunch.com/support says servers are sometimes down because Facepunch is updating them, because they crashed and are being brought back up, or because of DDoS attacks, and that Facepunch can't do much about the last one. Facepunch's January 11, 2018 "Server Downtime" post gives a longer account of one such stretch of DDoS downtime, including how some hosting providers null-route an attacked server for hours to a day. It is a 2018 post, so it shows how Facepunch described the problem then, not what is happening now.

What day is the Rust monthly update and wipe, and where is it announced?

Facepunch's January 1, 2026 devblog says monthly updates are guaranteed on the first Thursday of each month, and its devblogs from February to September 2026 all landed on a first Thursday (February 5, March 5, April 2, May 7, June 4, July 2, August 6, September 3). A June 2023 devblog says the default monthly server wipe timer is the first Thursday of every month at 19:00 London time and lines up with Rust's forced wipe, and the August 2026 devblog called September 3 "the September wipe". Each month's post is on rust.facepunch.com/news and the Steam news hub. By that pattern the next update would be Thursday, October 1, 2026 (our inference, not a Facepunch announcement). Server owners can set their own weekly, biweekly or monthly wipe timers, so community servers don't all follow this day.

What happens to my progress when a Rust server wipes?

Facepunch's November 6, 2025 devblog separates two kinds of wipe: a map wipe, after which players keep the blueprints they have already unlocked, and a blueprint wipe. It says most servers, including Facepunch's own, did not blueprint wipe, that it wiped all blueprints and all servers that day, and that whether to do so every month was undecided ("maybe" and not committing yet). No official statement on whether Facepunch's servers currently blueprint wipe each month was found, so check the latest devblog before assuming either way. Facepunch's March 2025 Premium Servers post also says community-run official servers may have their own separate blueprint wipe schedules.

Do I have to launch Rust through Steam, and does Easy Anti-Cheat need a firewall exception?

Yes to launching through Steam: Facepunch's "EAC Authentication Timeout" article says Rust should always be started from the Steam library, because other launch methods mean Easy Anti-Cheat doesn't load and that leads to errors. For "EAC: Disconnected", Facepunch says the client uses a normal HTTP/HTTPS connection to client.easyanticheat.net on ports 80 and 443, so antivirus or firewall software has to let that connection through.

Do I need TPM and Secure Boot to play Rust?

Only on servers that require them. Facepunch's March 5, 2026 devblog lets servers opt in to requiring TPM and Secure Boot; a server that requires them for everyone shows a "Secure" tag in the server browser, and clicking a server shows what it requires and whether your PC meets it. Facepunch's support article on turning on TPM and Secure Boot (last updated September 11, 2026) says the first phase covers select servers and that a second phase would require it globally, with the timeline to be given in the monthly devblog; no global date was found in the sources read for this page.

What does the Rust startup error "Steam not open?" mean?

Facepunch lists it as a common startup error and gives an ordered list of fixes: restart Steam and Rust, update Steam, opt out of Steam betas, verify Rust's files, and as a last step do a fresh install.

Does this page cover Rust Console Edition?

No. Facepunch's support site says the console edition is developed and supported by Double Eleven, not Facepunch, and that support tickets to Facepunch about the console edition will be rejected. It points console players to rust.double11.com and Double Eleven's support site. This site tracks the PC game published by Facepunch.
