The game boots you to the main menu mid-session with a plain "An unexpected disconnection occurred" dialog and no other client-side error — often in a burst affecting many players at once, typically around a league launch or major patch.
This is a server-side failure, not something broken on your PC. It was widely reported starting with Path of Exile 2's Early Access launch on December 6, 2024, when GGG pushed last-minute database upgrades to handle an influx of over a million registered players and the client began dropping people with this message alongside a separate "Unable to Connect to Login Server" error. Coverage at the time attributed it squarely to server overload rather than anything a player could fix, and noted the pattern usually fades within the first launch week as GGG brings capacity in line with demand — though it can resurface during any later spike. GGG's own patch commentary has separately described stretches where server-side crash rates ran roughly six times higher than normal following a content update, framing those specifically as easier-to-diagnose server bugs rather than a client problem.
