The game boots you to the main menu mid-session with a plain "An unexpected disconnection occurred" dialog and no other client-side error — often in a burst affecting many players at once, typically around a league launch or major patch.

This is a server-side failure, not something broken on your PC. It was widely reported from Path of Exile 2's Early Access launch on December 6, 2024, when GGG pushed last-minute database upgrades for over a million registered players and the client began dropping people with this message plus a separate "Unable to Connect to Login Server" error.

Coverage at the time blamed server overload, not anything a player could fix, and said the pattern usually fades within the first launch week, though it can resurface later. GGG's own patch commentary has separately described stretches of server-side crash rates running roughly six times higher than normal, including a June 4, 2026 hotfix that shipped a missing data file and crashed servers for players using radius jewels near the affected skill-tree nodes.
