Path of Exile 2 "Steam: Not connected to Steam" login error

The login screen shows "Login Error: Steam: Not connected to steam" even though Steam itself is open — often with your Steam friends list also showing "no connection" at the same time.
Also appears as: steam not connected to steam poe2, login error steam not connected, path of exile 2 not connected to steam, poe2 cant login steam, steam connection error poe2
This is Steam's own client failing to hand off a connection to Path of Exile 2 — a Steam-side handshake problem, not a GGG server issue and not the separate "your account does not have access" error (which is about an unredeemed or unlinked Early Access key and needs linking your account on pathofexile.com, a different fix entirely). A GGG forum thread dedicated to this exact message ran from December 2024 through March 2025 with reports throughout; no GGG staff reply appears in it, but a player-confirmed fix does: restarting Steam.
What to try
- 01Fully close Steam (not just the game) and relaunch it before retrying. A player in GGG's own forum thread reported: "Restarting Steam resolved this issue for me."Reported
