Old School RuneScape error codes and crash fixes
Every error, crash and connection failure we have a fix for, one page per code. Before the fix, each page says whether the problem is your machine or the studio's servers — because if it's theirs, no amount of verifying game files will help, and the only useful answer is whether it's happening right now.
Things you can fix
Crashes, install faults and driver conflicts. Find your symptom, work the steps in order, stop when it launches.
Old School RuneScape "Too many login attempts from your address"
Login is refused with "Too many login attempts from your address", often after several tries in a row or during a busy period.
Old School RuneScape "Access Blocked" with a Ray ID: fix
The website, mobile app or Jagex Launcher shows an "Access Blocked" message with a Ray ID and will not let you in.
Old School RuneScape Launcher "Could not authenticate": fix
The Jagex Launcher shows "Could not authenticate" while loading, before you can pick a character.
Old School RuneScape RuneLite "error fetching bootstrap": fix
RuneLite will not start, and launcher.log shows "error fetching bootstrap" with an exception such as "Server returned HTTP response code: 403".
Old School RuneScape "To access this free world" message: fix
Logging in to a free-to-play world shows "To access this free world, log into a members world and move your character to a non-members area".
Old School RuneScape launcher "Please wait while an update is applied"
The Jagex Launcher stays on "Please wait while an update is applied." and never finishes.
Old School RuneScape mobile: "Game Client undergoing update maintenance"
The mobile app shows "Game Client undergoing update maintenance. Please try again later." and will not log in.
Things you cannot
Queues, capacity limits and login failures. These are server-side — every page below links back to live status rather than a fix you can perform yourself.
Old School RuneScape "Error connecting to server": fix
The client, Steam launch or mobile app fails to connect to a world or the login server with an "error connecting to server" message, often at the same time as other players.
Old School RuneScape "Unable to connect. Login server offline."
Login fails with "Unable to connect. Login server offline." on Steam, RuneLite and mobile alike, on every world you try.
How these are graded
Every fix step carries a label. Confirmed means players demonstrably got back in with it, or the studio said so directly.Reported means it worked for some people and not others. Unconfirmed means it's circulating and there's no evidence either way yet. The distinction is the point — a page that lists five fixes with equal confidence costs you an evening.
