Concurrent players on Steam right now. A real outage pulls this number down within minutes, so a normal count alongside a flat report count usually means the problem is on your end.

About Old School RuneScape's servers

Old School RuneScape is Jagex’s fantasy MMORPG that runs on the game’s 2007 build and is shaped by player votes on new content. It is on PC, through the Jagex Launcher, the standalone client, Steam and the RuneLite third-party client, and on iOS and Android. Steam lists it as app 1343370.

Jagex does publish a status page for this game, the Game Status Information Centre, with a plain “Current Status” line, a list of open and resolved issues and the weekly schedule. Its own note says it is manually updated and can lag behind events in the evening or at weekends. Read the timing lines there and not third-party mirrors: the weekly game update usually runs on Wednesdays, with the in-game shutdown timer at 9:45 UTC and the game offline at 10:30 UTC, and weekly maintenance usually runs on Tuesdays at 9:00 UTC, starting at 11:00 UTC every few weeks instead. Outages beyond those windows are posted to the page and to the @OldSchoolRS account.

The player count on this page comes from Steam only. Most players log in through the Jagex Launcher, RuneLite or mobile, so the number is a slice of the population, not the population. What matters for an outage is the direction: when the servers drop, even that slice falls toward zero.

The login errors players search for fall into two groups. Jagex has its own support articles for “Too many login attempts from your address”, “Access Blocked”, the Launcher’s “Could not authenticate”, and the members-world “To access this free world” message, and those pages here follow Jagex’s wording. “Error connecting to server” and “Unable to connect. Login server offline.” have no dedicated Jagex article; the evidence is Steam threads, including one where a Jagex moderator acknowledged a server problem in March 2021. In both groups, check the status page before changing anything on your own machine.

Maintenance, queues, and real outages

Three different things get reported as "Old School RuneScape is down," and only one of them is an outage. The chart above is the fastest way to tell them apart, once there's data on it:

A real outage

Reports spike hard within an hour, then decay as the problem is fixed. Nobody announced it in advance.

Scheduled maintenance

Reports climb steadily and stay flat for the length of the window, because everyone hits the same wall at the same time and keeps hitting it.

A login queue

Matchmaking/login reports climb while server-connection reports stay low, and a Steam player count (if shown above) holds flat instead of dropping. The servers are up and full, not down — waiting is the only fix.

Announced maintenance would show up at the studio's own status channel or the official Discord before it shows up here.

If it's only broken for you

Most "is it down" moments aren't outages. Work down this list before assuming the servers are the problem — it's ordered by how often each one turns out to be the answer, not by how easy it is.

  1. 01

Check the report count above first

It costs nothing and it settles the question. A flat report count means other players are getting in fine, and everything below is worth your time. A spike means it isn't you, and none of it is.

  2. 02

    Verify the game files

In Steam: right-click Old School RuneScape → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. A partial patch is the single most common cause of a game that launches and then fails to connect.

  3. 03

Restart the whole chain, in order

Game, then your launcher/Steam, then your router. People almost always do the first and skip the third — a stale router NAT table produces exactly the symptom people report as "servers down."

  4. 04

Rule out a VPN or restrictive network

A VPN fails matchmaking far more often than it fixes it, and so does a corporate or campus network that blocks the UDP ports a game server needs. If you're on a network you don't administer, that's the likely answer.

  5. 05

If it crashes rather than fails to connect, treat it as a crash

A game that starts and then dies, rather than never connecting, is usually a local fault — most often graphics drivers or overlay software, not the servers.

Old School RuneScape server status: common questions

Is Old School RuneScape down right now?

As of 17:54 UTC, 0 players have reported a problem in the last 15 minutes — counted as people, so repeat taps from one person don't inflate it. This page updates on every load.

Does Old School RuneScape have an official status page?

Yes. Jagex runs the Game Status Information Centre for Old School RuneScape. On September 25, 2026 it showed "Current Status: ONLINE" and listed open issues, resolved issues and planned regional maintenance. The page carries its own caveat: "This page is manually updated, and due to events happening in the evening or weekend, this page may not be up to date." So a green status there is a good sign, not a guarantee, and an outage that started minutes ago may not be posted yet. Note the address needs the oldschool=1 part; without it the page returned a 404 when we checked.

Error connecting to server: check the status page first →

When is the weekly maintenance and update window for Old School RuneScape?

Jagex's status page lists two weekly windows, both in UTC. The weekly game update usually happens on Wednesdays: a 45-minute shutdown timer appears in game at 9:45 UTC and the game goes offline at 10:30 UTC. Weekly maintenance usually happens on Tuesdays at 9:00 UTC, with the timer at 8:15 UTC and the game back around 9:30 UTC; every few weeks that maintenance window starts at 11:00 UTC instead. The page's return-time line for the Wednesday update reads about 10:30 UTC, the same as the offline time, so it does not give a clear back-online time for that window. If another site quotes different times, Jagex's own page is the one to trust.

Where does Jagex announce Old School RuneScape outages?

On the official status page, and on the @OldSchoolRS account, which Jagex links from the Old School RuneScape home page and from its own support articles. A Jagex moderator also pointed players to that Twitter account in a March 4, 2021 Steam thread as the place updates would appear first during a server problem. We have not verified any other support account as official, so we do not list one.

"Unable to connect. Login server offline." →

Why is the player count on this page so low for such a big game?

The number this site shows is Steam-launched players only, which is a slice of everyone playing. Most players use the Jagex Launcher, RuneLite or the mobile apps, none of which report to Steam. So do not read the absolute number as the game's population. A count dropping toward zero is still the outage signal, because when the servers are down the Steam slice disappears too. Its size is not the population; its sudden drop is the signal.

Do I need a Jagex Account to log in, and what does 'Too many login attempts from your address' mean?

The Jagex Launcher requires a Jagex Account, and Jagex says all new players have needed one for the Launcher since November 7, 2023; the standalone official clients still accept a legacy RuneScape login for now, and Jagex says it plans to make Jagex Accounts mandatory in the future. After a character is imported to a Jagex Account it can still be played through Steam, with one character linked per Steam account. "Too many login attempts from your address" is, per Jagex, commonly associated with periods of high traffic; Jagex recommends waiting at least 30 minutes between attempts, because repeated attempts can make it worse.

Is RuneLite officially supported by Jagex?

Jagex lists RuneLite and HDOS as approved third-party clients on its recommended specifications page, and its Jagex Accounts FAQ says the Jagex Launcher supports the official RuneScape and Old School RuneScape clients and RuneLite. RuneLite can also be installed and launched from the Launcher. Jagex's "too many login attempts" article does say third-party clients use a tunnelled connection service that can contribute to that error, and RuneLite documents its own start-up errors separately.

I see 'Access Blocked' with a Ray ID. Has my account been banned?

No. Jagex's article says the account has not been blocked or locked in any way; it is the connection that has not been allowed. The listed fixes are to turn off any VPN, check that the device time zone is set correctly, keep the browser, app or Launcher up to date, and send Jagex the Ray ID from the message if it persists.

The mobile app says 'Game Client undergoing update maintenance'. Is the game down?

Jagex's mobile support article says updating to the most recent version of the app should resolve that message, so it can be a version problem on your device rather than an outage. Check the status page if updating does not help.
