Gears of War: E-Day "Not available to play yet" (fix)

On launch day the game says it is "not available to play yet" even though the release time has passed and you own it (Game Pass Ultimate, premium edition).

Also appears as: not available to play yet, not available t0 play yet, gears of war e-day not available to play yet, gears e-day not available to play yet game pass, gears of war e-day can't launch game pass, gears of war e-day premium edition won't launch, gears of war e-day pre-order version

This is a launch entitlement error: the game refuses to start from the edition entry you launched, even though you own it. Nothing is broken on your PC, but which entry you launch is something you can change. The Coalition hasn't commented on it.

An r/GearsOfWar thread (57 upvotes, 88 comments, October 1) describes it on PC with Game Pass Ultimate and the premium edition, after 8 AM. The poster said launching the normal pre-order edition "seems to work", and a commenter said the same. Other fixes below are single reports.

Fix it, step by step

  1. Launch the normal or pre-order edition instead of the premium tile

In the r/GearsOfWar thread, the advice was to launch the normal pre-order version of Gears of War: E-Day rather than the premium or upgrade entry. The original poster replied "Okay this seems to work", and a commenter (3 upvotes) said it worked for them on PC too.

  2. Try each E-Day edition in your library until one launches (one report)

One commenter said they had to try every edition, and the Gears of War: E-Day Pre-Order entry was the one that let them in. One report.

  3. Search the store for the full Ultimate edition, not the upgrade (one report)

One commenter said to search the store for the actual Ultimate edition, not the upgrade listing, and launch that. Nobody else confirmed it.

  4. Press Launch again several times (two reports)

One commenter said clicking Launch repeatedly loaded the game after 5 to 10 attempts, and a reply said it took 4 tries for them.

  5. Close and reopen the Xbox app, or restart the console (unconfirmed)

Commenters (1 upvote each) said exiting and reopening the Xbox app fixed it, or that restarting the console did, one saying it took about five restarts. The original poster did not confirm either.
