Escape from Tarkov error 206: launcher login fails (fix)

The BSG Launcher rejects your login with "Error 206" even though the same email and password work fine on the Battlestate Games website.
Also appears as: escape from tarkov error 206, eft error 206, tarkov launcher error 206, error 206 wrong email or password
Error 206 is a launcher-side authentication failure, reported repeatedly on Battlestate's own official forum. A Battlestate moderator's reply on the forum (preserved via devtrackers.gg) points at the login field itself: "Make sure that your login (that would be your email or profile name) is entered correctly as well" — and separately warns that repeated failed attempts increase the wait time before you can try again, which can look like the launcher is simply broken when it's actually rate-limiting you. The website-works-but-launcher-doesn't pattern several players describe fits a stale cached credential or autofill mismatch in the launcher rather than the account itself being wrong.
Fix it, step by step
Re-type your credentials manually into the BSG Launcher
Re-type your email/profile name and password manually into the BSG Launcher instead of using a password manager or browser autofill — a Battlestate moderator's reply on the official forum specifically flags the login field as the thing to double-check.
Wait a few minutes after several failed attempts
If you've just failed several attempts, stop and wait a few minutes — the launcher's cooldown after repeated failures can present as another 206 rather than a visible timer.
Check the website login, then clear the launcher's cached login
Confirm the same credentials log into the Battlestate Games website directly. If they work there but not the launcher, clear the launcher's cached login (Windows: delete the BsgLauncher folder under %appdata%\Battlestate Games) and log in fresh.
Sorted. Glad that worked.
Nothing worked. Here's what to do next.
