Enshrouded "Your Steam client is not running" (fix)

After the 1.0 update, Enshrouded stops launching and shows "Your Steam client is not running." even though Steam is open.
Also appears as: Your Steam client is not running, Steam client not running, Steam app is not running, enshrouded steam client not running, enshrouded won't launch after 1.0 update, enshrouded steam deck steam app is not running
This is a local Steam problem, not a Keen Games server outage. Keen's developer RoxinC lists it in the pinned "1.0 Known Issues and Temporary Workarounds" thread as "a common known Steam issue", and says uninstalling and reinstalling Steam, then restarting your PC, will fix it in most cases.
Players on r/Enshrouded report the same dialog right after updating the game. Other suggestions there (restarting Steam, updating Steam, switching Proton version on Linux) are mixed: each worked for one person and failed for another.
Fix it, step by step
Uninstall and reinstall Steam, then restart your PC
This is the workaround from Keen's developer in the pinned "1.0 Known Issues and Temporary Workarounds" thread: "This is a common known Steam issue. In most cases, uninstalling and reinstalling Steam, then restarting your PC, will fix it." The thread also links a Steam Support article on the problem.
Update the Steam client (unconfirmed)
In one r/Enshrouded thread a commenter says a Steam update fixed it; the original poster didn't confirm. Another commenter blamed "out of date steam dlls". Neither is backed by Keen.
Linux or Steam Deck: try Proton Experimental (mixed results)
On Linux and Steam Deck, switch the game's compatibility tool to Proton Experimental. It fixed the error for one Linux commenter on r/Enshrouded, but the original poster said it did not fix theirs. A Steam Deck player in Keen's pinned thread says no Proton version they tried (Experimental, 9, 10, 11, GE) helped, and a game reinstall didn't either.
Linux: try GE-Proton11-7 or Proton 11.0.2 (one report each)
In a Steam Discussions thread on Linux crashes after 1.0, one player says "I changed to GE-Proton11-7 and it works" for the "steam not running" error, and another says "I selected Proton 11.0.2 and Enshrouded launches for me now". Each is a single report, and the Steam Deck player in Keen's pinned thread says GE didn't help them.
- NoteReported
A commenter suggested restarting Steam, and one original poster on r/Enshrouded said it did not work for them. If you've tried that already, the reinstall step above is the one Keen points to.
Sorted. Glad that worked.
