Enshrouded "Server Version Mismatch" error (fix)

After Enshrouded updates, joining a dedicated server fails with "Server Version Mismatch", even though your own game is fully up to date.

Also appears as: Server Version Mismatch, enshrouded server version mismatch, enshrouded version mismatch, enshrouded can't join dedicated server after update, enshrouded dedicated server outdated, enshrouded server not updating

The game on your PC and the dedicated server are running different versions. The client updates through Steam on its own, but the server is a separate install that has to be updated by whoever runs it, so the fix sits with the server owner, not Keen Games.

In the r/Enshrouded thread we found, the original poster says stopping and restarting the server was the fix, and a subreddit moderator (not a confirmed Keen employee) says you need to "physically update the server itself" because rebooting may not apply updates. That is one thread.

Enshrouded 1.0 (October 15) and Hotfix 1.0.0.1 (same day) both shipped as game updates, so a server left on an older build is a likely cause now. That is our inference, not a Keen statement.

Fix it, step by step

  1. Back up the server's savegame folder before you update

Before updating or restarting, copy the server's savegame folder somewhere safe. A Steam Discussions thread from October 16 has players on Nitrado reporting that their Enshrouded server lost world progress after a restart or update, and one says hitting reset wiped the world. It's a precaution based on those reports, not a known cause of the mismatch.

  2. Update the dedicated server itself, not just the game on your PC

If you run the server, update it to the current build. The server is its own Steam app, "Enshrouded Dedicated Server" (app 2278520), so with SteamCMD that means running app_update 2278520 validate. The moderator's advice in the r/Enshrouded thread was "You just need to physically update the server itself. Depending on how you have it set up, rebooting may not actually apply updates."

  3. Stop the server fully, then start it again

After updating, stop the server process completely and start it again. The original poster in the thread says "Stopping and restarting the server is the fix" and marked their thread solved.

  4. On a rented server, use your host's update option (unconfirmed)

If a company hosts the server (Nitrado, G-Portal and similar), look in its control panel for an update or reinstall option, or ask its support. We found no instructions from Keen or those hosts for this, so the exact button varies. Watch for a "reset" option, which players in the Nitrado thread say wiped the world.

  5. Note

If you're joining a friend's or a community server, there's nothing to change on your PC. Tell the host the game has updated and ask them to update and restart the server. For other join problems see the Joining Game Failed page.
