DayZ "Windows cannot access the specified device" fix

DayZ won't launch, or won't launch with BattlEye, and Windows shows "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

Also appears as: Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file, Windows cannot access the specified device path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item, dayz error windows cannot access the specified device path or file, DayZ_x64.exe Windows cannot access, dayz won't launch no appropriate permissions

This is a Windows dialog, not a DayZ error code, and players tie it to BattlEye, the anti-cheat DayZ starts with the game. It is reported on the player's PC, and the servers aren't involved. Bohemia hasn't commented in the threads we read.

It is still being reported: Steam Discussions threads from September 30 and October 12, 2026 describe it, an r/dayz poster hit it again after Badlands launched on October 15, and one Russian-language thread has run since January 2025 (160+ replies). No fix is confirmed: the steps below are single player reports, and the usual admin-rights and antivirus tweaks often didn't help.

Fix it, step by step

  1. Delete the BattlEye folder and relaunch as administrator (one report)

On October 13, 2026 one player said deleting the BattlEye folder in the DayZ folder and relaunching as administrator made DayZ prompt to reinstall BattlEye, which fixed their problem. The original poster, who was running a LAN server, said it didn't help them.

  2. Start DayZ straight from Steam, without the DayZ Launcher (one report)

In an r/dayz thread from October 15, 2026, one player said "when I start to play without the launcher it works fine. Just run the game straight from steam, and then join the server." The original poster said no servers showed up that way, and that in the end retrying until it launched was the only thing that worked for them.

  3. Set the BattlEye service to start automatically (one report)

One player on Windows 11 said that in Windows Services the BattlEye service needed its status set to running and its startup type to automatic, because Windows had turned its automatic start off. This is one report that no one else confirmed.

  4. Fully uninstall third-party antivirus (one report)

One player said disabling their antivirus and adding exceptions did not help, and that only uninstalling it completely (Dr.Web Security Space) fixed it. Nobody else confirmed.

  5. Disable OneDrive and Steam Cloud for DayZ, then reinstall BattlEye (one reply)

On September 30, 2026 a regular in the DayZ Troubleshooting forum replied to a player with this error to disable and uninstall OneDrive, turn off Steam Cloud saves for DayZ, and if those don't help, reinstall BattlEye. The original poster hadn't replied when we checked.

  6. Note

In a long Russian-language thread, several players describe deleting DayZ's BattlEye folder and copying in the one from another BattlEye game (Unturned) or from DayZ Experimental. Two said it worked, others said it didn't or stopped working later. Mixing anti-cheat files between games isn't something Bohemia or BattlEye document, so we don't list it as a fix.

    Unconfirmed
  7. Note

Players on September 30 and October 12, 2026 said running DayZ as administrator, giving full control permissions, and switching antivirus off did not fix it. One player in the Russian thread said running Steam as administrator did, and others said that didn't help them. BattlEye's own steps for a service that won't start are on the BattlEye page.

    Unconfirmed
