DayZ "Failed to initialize BattlEye Service": fix

DayZ won't start or join a server and shows "Failed to initialize BattlEye Service: Generic Error" (or a similar "Failed to initialize BattlEye Service: ..." message) from the BattlEye launcher.

Also appears as: Failed to initialize BattlEye Service: Generic Error, Failed to initialize the BattlEye service, Failed to start BattlEye Service, BattlEye Service startup failed, BattlEye Service startup failed. Do you want to launch DayZ without BattlEye?, dayz battleye error, dayz battleye not working, dayz won't launch BattlEye

BattlEye is the anti-cheat DayZ uses, and this message means its Windows service couldn't start on your PC. BattlEye's own FAQ says it happens when something on your system, usually security software or a permissions problem, stops the service from installing or starting. It isn't a DayZ server problem.

The steps below are BattlEye's official ones. In a March 2025 Steam thread, a player blamed Windows update KB5053602 after BattlEye broke in DayZ and Unturned and said reinstalling, admin rights and removing their antivirus did not help; that is one report and no cause has been confirmed.

Fix it, step by step

  1. Allow the BattlEye files in your antivirus and security software

BattlEye's FAQ says security software must not block BEService.exe or BEService_x64.exe in DayZ's BattlEye folder, or the whole BattlEye service folder, usually C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\BattlEye. You may need to add them to your security software's exception list.

  2. Delete the BattlEye service folder and start DayZ again

If the exception list doesn't help, or you have no security software, BattlEye says it may be a permissions problem with its service folder. Delete C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\BattlEye, then launch DayZ so it is installed again.

  3. Run the BattlEye launcher (DayZ_BE) as administrator

BattlEye says to right-click the launcher executable in the DayZ folder, the one ending in _BE (here DayZ_BE), choose Properties, open the Compatibility tab, tick "Run this program as an administrator" and click OK.

  4. Verify the integrity of DayZ's game files in Steam

BattlEye's FAQ says to make sure all of its installation files are in the game folder by verifying the game files on Steam or reinstalling, and Bohemia's pinned Steam troubleshooting post lists verifying files first. In Steam, right-click DayZ, open Properties, Local Files, then Verify Integrity of Game Files.

  5. Note

BattlEye's FAQ says that if you still can't get it working, some unknown software may be blocking it or parts of Windows may be broken, and that a repair reinstallation of Windows is its definite solution. Try the other steps first. If DayZ's error is "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file", see that page for what players report.
