Active Matter "FATAL ERROR Driver3d error: E_INVALIDARG" (fix)

The game plays the audio but sticks on the loading screen after the photo sensitivity warning, or crashes as you enter a raid, then shows a "FATAL ERROR / Driver3d error: / E_INVALIDARG" dialog with a call stack. It started right after switching to AMD FSR Quality or turning on Frame Generation, and in one case survived a reinstall.

Also appears as: active matter fatal error, Driver3d error, E_INVALIDARG, active matter driver3d error e_invalidarg, active matter stuck on loading screen after photosensitivity warning, active matter crash after changing graphics settings, active matter FSR frame generation crash

This looks like a graphics settings or GPU driver problem on your side, not a server issue. In the threads we checked, it began right after the player switched to AMD FSR Quality, and another player's FSR plus Frame Generation crash went away when they went back to DX11 with temporal upscaling at 100%.

Only one player posted the exact dialog (in two threads), so this is reported, not confirmed. Gaijin's community manager asked for a bug report with a .clog file and did not name a cause. No fix has been confirmed.

Patch 0.4.0.173 fixed rendering bugs that "could cause client hangs and graphics device resets", but Gaijin did not link it to this dialog.

Fix it, step by step

  1. Verify game files through Steam

In Steam, right-click Active Matter, open Properties, then Installed Files and choose "Verify integrity of game files". Gaijin's community manager suggested this first. The player who posted the error said they had already tried it, and reinstalling, without success.

  2. Turn Frame Generation off or go back to DX11 with temporal (one report)

If you can still reach the settings menu, turn Frame Generation off. One player who crashed on entering a raid with FSR Quality plus Frame Generation on AMD driver 26.9.2 got a stable game by going back to DX11 with temporal upscaling at 100%. Another reply in that thread said Frame Generation was the cause and that DX12 works with it off. Both are player accounts, not Gaijin.

  3. Try the Vulkan graphics API (one report)

One player blamed AMD driver 26.9.2 and said switching to Vulkan fixed it for them, on an Insider build of Windows 11, so results may differ. It is a single report and the asker never confirmed it helped them.

  4. Turn Frame Generation off in active_matter.config.blk (unconfirmed)

For when you cannot reach the menu: one player said you can switch Frame Generation off by editing active_matter.config.blk in the game folder with Notepad. The setting name was not given, and the player who tried editing that file said it did not fix their crash.

  5. Note

No confirmed fix yet. Renaming or deleting active_matter.config.blk to regenerate the graphics config was suggested but did not work for the player who posted the error, and Gaijin has not said what causes this dialog. Check the status page for Active Matter at /active-matter/ to rule out a wider problem, and treat the steps above as things players tried, not fixes.

  6. Note

Gaijin's community manager asked for a bug report with a screenshot of the error and the .clog file the game writes to its folder on each launch, plus a .dap file for performance-related crashes. Use community.gaijin.net/issues/p/active_matter.
