ACE COMBAT 8 "Error 01" (UE Live) crash: fixes players report

The game crashes with a "UE Live" dialog showing "Error 01", at startup, when the campaign or Mission 1 starts, during cutscenes, or after about an hour of play.

Also appears as: Error 01, UE live error 01, UE Error 01, ERROR 01 after starting campaign, the UE Live game has crashed and will close, ace combat 8 crash on startup, ace combat 8 crashes mission 1, out of video memory

Error 01 is the most-reported crash on Steam Discussions, where a search for it returns 141 threads. It looks like an Unreal Engine crash on the player's PC, often linked to graphics drivers or memory; it is not a server error. Bandai Namco has opened an official "PC Crash Report Thread" asking for details, but we saw no official cause or fix.

The fixes below are all player reports and none is confirmed by Bandai Namco. Results are mixed, so work down the list rather than expecting one fix to work.

Fix it, step by step

  1. Add the DisableAsyncCompute launch option in Steam

In Steam, right-click the game, open Properties, and under Launch Options enter -DisableAsyncCompute -dpcvars="r.D3D12.AllowAsyncCompute=0". The poster played 10+ hours crash-free on an Nvidia 50-series card; several replies, including one on an Intel B580, said it fixed crashes, while one said it did not.

  2. Roll back Nvidia drivers to 610.47 (or 610.74)

Several Nvidia players in the same thread say downgrading to driver 610.47 stopped Error 01, and one player in another thread says 610.74 worked. A Steam reply also says newest drivers are the thing to avoid for now. One poster said the downgrade did nothing at first, then worked after retrying.

  3. Raise the Windows virtual memory (page file) to about 32 GB

An RX 9070 XT owner with 32 GB RAM who saw "Out of video memory" and Error 01 fixed it by setting Windows virtual memory to 32800 MB in System Properties. Posts in that thread say crashes are commoner on 16 GB of RAM.

  4. Set the Nvidia shader cache size to 100 GB (Control Panel)

One player fixed a Mission 11 Error 01 by changing the shader cache size in NVIDIA Control Panel from "Driver Managed" to 100 GB, and one other player said it helped to Mission 12. A third said it did not.

  5. Play in Fullscreen instead of Borderless or Windowed

One reply in a Steam thread says the crash is caused by Borderless and Windowed mode and to use Fullscreen with updated drivers. This is a single unverified comment.

  6. Verify the game files in Steam

One player said verifying the game files, which downloaded about 4 GB more, stopped their crashes. Use Steam's Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.

  7. Note

Bandai Namco's Steam announcement asks players to post specs and steps in the PC Crash Report Thread. This page will be updated when they name a fix.
