Valheim "Incompatible version" error: client vs server (fix)

You enter the server password and are disconnected with an "Incompatible version" message instead of loading in.

The message means the Valheim build on your client and the build on the server differ. Iron Gate has not published a page about it, so this rests on Steam Discussions threads from 2022 to 2024 and on server logs players pasted, which show a "VERSION check" line comparing the two builds. The pattern across those threads is a dedicated server that did not really update: a shortcut still pointing at an old install folder, Steam updating a different folder than the one being run, or a server left on a different branch. An Iron Gate account with the developer badge replied in one 2022 thread that updating does work, the server just has to be shut down and the update pushed as usual. These threads predate 1.0. For September 2026, Iron Gate's Hotfix 1.0.10 and 1.0.12 post says Switch 2 had been behind and that all platforms should be compatible for crossplay again, and its 1.0.14 to 1.0.16 posts say each patch takes a few days to reach every platform while crossplay keeps working.
What to try
- 01Shut the dedicated server down completely, update it, and start it again. The developer-badged reply in the 2022 thread says exactly this (there about Linux servers). Iron Gate's guide installs the server from the Tools list in the Steam Library as "Valheim Dedicated Server"; the players in these threads update it with SteamCMD using +app_update 896660 validate.Confirmed
- 02Compare the two builds. A server prints a "Valheim version:" line when it starts and logs a "VERSION check" line, with the client's version and its own, when a client connects; if the server's number is lower than yours, the server did not update. The newest client patch is listed at valheim.com/news (1.0.16 on September 25, 2026).Reported
- 03Make sure the server is updating the install you run. In two separate threads, players say they traced the problem to a desktop shortcut pointing at an old server folder, or to Steam updating a different install than the one being launched, and that correcting it fixed the mismatch.Reported
- 04Check the branch. In a June 2024 thread a player's freshly installed server turned out to be on the public test build while their client was on the normal branch (the client connected once it was switched to Public Test), and adding -beta public after +app_update 896660 in the update command fixed it for them. This is one player's report, not an Iron Gate instruction.Reported
