RuneScape 3: "error loading the game configuration"

The client shows "There was an error loading the game configuration from the website" with a firewall hint and a code in brackets such as (6,200), (7,28) or (7,7), and won't start.
Also appears as: There was an error loading the game configuration from the website, error loading the game configuration from the website runescape, runescape error loading game configuration, runescape firewall error (7,28), runescape firewall error (6,200), runescape check that this program is allowed to access the internet, runescape wont start firewall
The message blames your firewall, but the posters in one long Steam Discussions thread (37 replies, October 2020 to June 2025) mostly tied it to Jagex being down or in maintenance. In November 2021 and again in December 2021 players said the website or servers were down or in scheduled maintenance. On November 22, 2022 several said the servers were down, and the official @RuneScape account posted an "Important Update On Service Issues" the same day, though that post does not name this error. Others reported local causes: two blamed Avast or AVG antivirus and one a router web-filter setting. Jagex has no support article for this message that we could find, so all of this is player-reported. Check for an outage first.

- 01Check whether it is an outage before touching your firewall. Posters in the thread linked this error to servers being down or a scheduled update, and said the fix was waiting. Look at the official @RuneScape account on X and the Steam news hub for a notice.Reported
- 02Try the mobile app or the Jagex Launcher. One August 2024 poster said it was a Steam launcher problem and to use the Jagex Launcher or mobile instead. Nobody else confirmed it.Unconfirmed

- 04A June 2025 poster said verifying the game files or reinstalling usually resolves it, but the original poster and others in 2020 and 2021 had already reinstalled without success, so it may not help.Unconfirmed
