Path of Exile 2 "failed writing received data to disk" error

A fresh install or a routine patch update stops partway through with "Failed writing received data to disk" (sometimes "...to disk/ application"), whether on a brand-new install or an update after months away.

This is an open issue as of this writing — GGG's own Early Access Bug Reports forum has a thread dedicated to it, and no GGG staff reply or confirmed root cause appears in it. Reports there span multiple scenarios: updating after a month-long absence, a fresh install after fully removing the game, and failures as early as ~1GB into an ~85GB download. Players in that same thread tried disabling Windows Firewall and Defender, running the launcher as administrator, a full reinstall, and a file-integrity repair (PackCheck) — none of it is reported as having resolved the error for the people who tried it. Because no cause has been confirmed, don't treat any single step below as a guaranteed fix — they're what's been tried, not what's been shown to work.
What to try
- 01Confirm your install drive has enough free space for a full ~85GB install and isn't a failing or nearly-full external drive — worth ruling out first even though it wasn't confirmed as the cause in GGG's thread.Unconfirmed
- 02Temporarily disable Windows Defender and any third-party antivirus or firewall, then retry. Players in GGG's bug-report thread tried this without it resolving the issue for them, so treat it as worth ruling out rather than a likely fix.Reported
- 03Run PackCheck.exe from the install folder, or fully uninstall and reinstall. Also tried by affected players in the same thread without success — still worth attempting since it's the standard integrity check for this client.Unconfirmed
