About Once Human's servers

Once Human is a free-to-play, post-apocalyptic survival MMO developed by China’s Starry Studio and published globally (including on Steam) by NetEase Games. It launched on PC on July 9, 2024 (Steam app id 2139460), following an earlier closed-beta phase, and has run as a live service ever since with content updates roughly every two weeks. It’s a genuinely large game by Steam concurrent-player standards — around 18,600 players were online at the time this page was last checked — and it expanded to PlayStation 5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X|S on August 25, 2026 with full crossplay and cross-progression alongside its existing PC and mobile versions.

Players build bases, fight mutated enemies and other survivors, and progress through rotating “scenario” servers (time-limited maps tied to specific modes) as well as longer-running permanent servers, split across six regions: North America, South America, Europe, Japan, Korea, and Hong Kong/Macao/Taiwan. Each region is its own physical data center, so characters and data never cross between them, even after the console launch made cross-platform play possible within a region.

Once Human has no dedicated, live status dashboard. Maintenance windows, patch notes and outage notices are posted to the official news page at oncehuman.game/news, mirrored on the Steam news hub, and to the @OnceHuman_ account on X — all announcement feeds rather than a status page. In August 2025, Starry Studio publicly acknowledged a stretch of Steam login problems and said it had contacted Steam’s technical team while suggesting players try repairing their client or logging in again; that’s the clearest public admission so far that login trouble isn’t always a purely local problem.

Maintenance, queues, and real outages

Three different things get reported as "Once Human is down," and only one of them is an outage. The chart above is the fastest way to tell them apart, once there's data on it:

A real outage

Reports spike hard within an hour, then decay as the problem is fixed. Nobody announced it in advance.

Scheduled maintenance

Reports climb steadily and stay flat for the length of the window, because everyone hits the same wall at the same time and keeps hitting it.

A login queue

Matchmaking/login reports climb while server-connection reports stay low, and a Steam player count (if shown above) holds flat instead of dropping. The servers are up and full, not down — waiting is the only fix.

Announced maintenance would show up at the studio's own status channel or the official Discord before it shows up here.

If it's only broken for you

Most "is it down" moments aren't outages. Work down this list before assuming the servers are the problem — it's ordered by how often each one turns out to be the answer, not by how easy it is.

  1. 01

Check the report count above first

It costs nothing and it settles the question. A flat report count means other players are getting in fine, and everything below is worth your time. A spike means it isn't you, and none of it is.

  2. 02

    Verify the game files

In Steam: right-click Once Human → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. A partial patch is the single most common cause of a game that launches and then fails to connect.

  3. 03

Restart the whole chain, in order

Game, then your launcher/Steam, then your router. People almost always do the first and skip the third — a stale router NAT table produces exactly the symptom people report as "servers down."

  4. 04

Rule out a VPN or restrictive network

A VPN fails matchmaking far more often than it fixes it, and so does a corporate or campus network that blocks the UDP ports a game server needs. If you're on a network you don't administer, that's the likely answer.

  5. 05

If it crashes rather than fails to connect, treat it as a crash

A game that starts and then dies, rather than never connecting, is usually a local fault — most often graphics drivers or overlay software, not the servers.

Once Human server status: common questions

Is Once Human down right now?

As of 01:27 UTC, 0 players have reported a problem in the last 15 minutes — counted as people, so repeat taps from one person don't inflate it. This page updates on every load.

Does Once Human have an official server status page?

No dedicated live status or uptime dashboard has been found. The closest official channels are the news page at oncehuman.game/news (patch notes, maintenance windows and bug-fix rundowns are posted there first), the Steam news hub for app 2139460, and the @OnceHuman_ account on X. All three are announcement feeds rather than a status page, which is exactly the gap a tracker like this one exists to fill.

When does Once Human have maintenance, and how long does it last?

Roughly every two weeks, timed to a content update, and almost always starting at 4:00 PM Pacific Time. Recent examples: the version 3.0.5 update on September 2, 2026 was announced with an expected ~2-hour window, and version 3.0.6 on September 16, 2026 was announced with an expected ~3-hour window — both official posts note the actual reopen time can differ from the estimate. Check oncehuman.game/news or the Steam news hub before assuming a login problem is on your end.

What server regions does Once Human run, and can I play across regions?

Once Human's official console launch FAQ lists North America, South America, Europe, Japan, Korea, and Hong Kong/Macao/Taiwan as its regions. Each region runs on its own physical data center, and the same FAQ is explicit that "data cannot be shared" between them — so a character created in one region can't play with, or move to, a server in another.

Does Once Human support crossplay and cross-progression between PC, console, and mobile?

Yes, since the game's PS5/PS5 Pro/Xbox Series X|S console launch on August 25, 2026. Per the official console launch FAQ, players on console, PC and mobile within the same region can add friends, team up and play together, and an existing PC/mobile account can be linked to a console account in advance to keep the original character and its cosmetics. One PSN or Xbox account can only link to a single game account, and some servers are marked "Console" and restrict actual play to console devices even though PC/mobile can view characters on them.

What does "Server is Full" mean when I try to join a friend's server?

It blocks new character creation or joining once a server's concurrent-player or character-creation cap is hit — and multiple Steam Discussions reports describe seeing this message even while the same server's population meter shows "Low," which is a real, widely-reported inconsistency rather than a rare glitch. No official explanation of the exact cap mechanic has been published. See the dedicated page for what's actually known and what tends to help.

What does a "Server Request Timeout" error mean — is it my connection or Once Human's servers?

It means your client sent a login or reconnect request to a specific server and never got a response — the same class of failure as other games' generic connection-timeout codes. It's been reported independently across at least eight separate Steam Discussions threads between August 2024 and September 2025, several with dozens of replies, which points at the server side more often than a purely local network issue, though no official cause has been confirmed.

Do Once Human's servers wipe, and what's the difference between a "scenario" server and a permanent one?

Once Human runs both permanent servers and shorter-lived "scenario" servers tied to specific game modes (The Way of Winter, Deviation, Manibus and others), which open on a recurring schedule and get merged with each other as population thins rather than deleted outright — Starry Studio's official Steam news feed posted a "Dev Blog | Permanent Scenario Server Merge Notice" on September 15, 2026, alongside a "Way of Winter" merge folded into the September 16 maintenance and a "Deviation" South America merge on September 17. Exact rules for which characters/progress carry through a given merge are announced per-merge in that same news feed, not published as a single standing policy.
