Gravebound crashes to the main menu when a squadmate joins

A co-op lobby crashes back to the main menu within seconds of a squadmate joining — not a full application crash, just an abrupt return to the menu. It happens consistently for one specific player while their squadmate, on a different connection, plays the same session without any issue.

One detailed report during the playtest came from a Russia-based player whose sessions kept dropping to the main menu the moment a squadmate (playing from Belarus, unaffected) joined. A Crater Studios team member pulled the player's client logs and found the game had successfully created a dedicated match server for the lobby, but the player's own client was timing out trying to reach it. The studio was direct about what that does and doesn't mean: "We don't do anything special to block connections from Russia, but the server is in the States, so any router node/service provider could block it" — pointing at ISP or network-path filtering between the player and a US-hosted server, not a deliberate block on Crater Studios' side. They couldn't offer a list of server IPs to whitelist, since Gravebound's dedicated servers spin up per match rather than living at a fixed address, and said they'd look into getting the game added to the NoPing routing-optimization program used by other Western games with a Russia/CIS audience — with no confirmation yet that this has actually shipped.

What to try

  1. 01Make sure everyone in the squad is on the same game version and has verified their game files through Steam first. A separate player hitting what looked like the same crash-to-menu symptom found it was actually a version mismatch, fixed by updating — worth ruling out before assuming it's the same regional-routing issue.Reported
  2. 02If versions and files check out, this is very likely a network path problem between your connection and Gravebound's US-hosted match server rather than anything wrong with your install. A VPN that routes around the blocked path is the only workaround Crater Studios has suggested so far — they couldn't provide specific IPs or domains to whitelist instead, since match servers spin up per-session rather than at a fixed address.Reported
